This guy I know is bragging about 100k out the game but like bro the field is competitive lmao be realistic
A friend of mine's brother did chemical engineering at college and started making 115k out of the gate

the money they save building safe bridges with less materials is wasted on the IT workload they create from their tech illiteracy
I have a friend that is a burger engineering specialist and he's making 15k out of the gate.

Probably ego and its not just engineering majors that get mad when theyre reality checked

Why reality check anyone? Let them get their education and attempt to succeed.
Its a good thing you were there to reality check him
It's literally the same thing
As an engineer I frequently wish I'd gone for something like accounting. Easier job with better pay, even if it might be boring. I would never advise anyone looking at possible majors to go for engineering these days apart from maybe chemical or computer.

The difficulty of being an engineer definitely doesn't measure up to the pay you get. But some variations of "engineer" absolutely have it better than others.
Engineers in general get mad when you question them.

The real question is why do so many engineers hold alt-right or libertarian views.

Its not that unrealistic tbh especially depending on the specific field

I did computer science engineering. It's like regular CS, except more math and some hardware courses. Oh, and taught by engineering professors, so no grade inflation and no sympathy.
Medical majors are on par

What field isn't competitive? The day of being able to half-ass your education, graduate with a 2.5 GPA, and get some lifelong career in your field is long over. It's not that engineers getting 100k out of the gate isn't realistic (it is). It's that all engineers aren't going to make that out of the gate. So if your friend is pulling like a 3.5+ GPA its a very real possibility, but if not then I'd suggest telling them to study more.

hell naaw you dont want accounting. My wife is an accountant and her hours are insanely horseshit from January 1 until May, plus another micro busy season for all of September thru October. Otherwise, her non busy season hours are still 50-55 a week

Engineers fresh out of school are such easy prey for companies right now. Most of them don't do anything remotely close to what they went to school for as Manufacturing Engineers.

Funny, I make that fixing the dumbass designs engineers make when designing new vehicles.
I'm an artist at what I do. I fuel the fire, watch it burn, and laugh all the while.
I only know a handful of people with engineering degrees but they all make very good money and did so from a fairly young age.

I'm an accountant and I work 37.5 hours a week, most of that is goofing off at home
I probably should have gone for the softer liberal arts CS degree, rather than the harder engineering CSE degree. It was way more work, especially if you wanted to get out in four years.

even if you don't make it on your first job right out of college you can advance rapidly

I got my first job in software summer engineering 2019 (8 years out of college, though I had spent that time in an unrelated field) and I hit six figures in march of 2023

There's a lot of variety in accounting. If you're in Big 4 tax or audit, you'll be pulling some serious hours sooner or later if you want to move up in the world. Other shops (or back office work at non-CPA firms) can be a pretty routine 9 - 5.
