Belgium has withdrawn from the mixed relay triathlon race on Monday and Switzerland has had to mix up its roster after athletes from both countries fell ill following the initial triathlon races last week.

Belgium announced it was dropping out of the race after one of its triathletes, Claire Michel, has fallen ill, its National Olympic Committee said in a statement. The statement did not specify Michels illness, which was reported days after she swam in the River Seine during the womens triathlon on Wednesday.

The BOIC and Belgian Triathlon must unfortunately announce that the Belgian Hammers will not be starting the mixed relay at the Paris Olympic Games tomorrow. The decision, like this communication, was taken in consultation with the athletes and their entourage, the statement read.

If you trained a ton to make it to the Olympics and the event you're in required swimming in water with high levels of E. coli, would you still do it?

Money.
Absolutely embarrassing for France and the Olympics. Pretty much everyone was telling them this was a bad idea.

See how many more get sick.

Can't be that bad if it's only one athlete. A lot did their second triathlon today. Most public swimming pools have E.coli.

It's two that we know of so far, and they delayed the event because the river had levels of E. coli that were way too high.

Also, chlorine kills e. coli

Why does it have to be the Seine river? Can't the triathlon be held at a different river in France, or even another country? Just because it's the Paris 2024 Olympics, doesn't mean every event has to be held there. Use common sense for a change and protect the athletes, who trained their whole lives for this moment of competing at the highest level and representing their country. Come on now.

Yeah swimming in a river in a large city, no matter the city, seems like a terrible idea.

A river doesn't need to look or smell like the Ganges River to be a hotbed of bacteria. Most rivers that run through cities you want to absolutely avoid getting into.

Yeah, but it's not always used properly, so . . .

Also, the Paris Games have been great. The nationalistic armchair whining about them is laughable.

Complaining about making people swim in a river where e. coli levels are so high that they have to delay the event isn't nationalistic armchair whining.

They spent 1.5 billion trying to clean the river leading up to the Olympics and its still nasty and needed to be delayed to even be able to use it. What a waste.

My local one might be ok down stream. Past the main city. Hell no. The outlet either since it has a naval base near by.

They needed to spent that much because it has been illegal to swim in the Seine because of health hazards for over 100 years and then the heavy downpour during the opening ceremony effed up all their plans. It's frankly a miracle they got the Seine to an acceptable level during the short time they had after that.

I live in STL so on the Mississippi river and wouldn't get caught dead in the river south of the twin cities in MN. The river by its source is beautiful but once it goes through the twin cities things start getting gross.

Im in the Twin Cities and still wouldnt touch that water.

Whats funny is people let their dogs swim in it, then call us wondering why their dog has hotspots afterwards.

Maybe stop having open water swimming events in the olympics? Didn't Rio have terrible water conditions as well?

He personally stated he was puking because he was way too hot. He's from Canada and trains in much cooler weather, and he just overheated in France.
