the virgin ultimate edition (2024):

  • The base game (SOMETIMES LOL, may be sold separately!)
  • Some fancy-colored reskins of weapons that will only be good for the first half hour of the game! (they're GOLD omg!)
  • Includes Season Pass (not sure what it is or when it will come out, but yeah! WOOOO!)
  • Includes the $2 day-one DLC that LOSERS who buy STANDARD will have to buy SEPARATE (they suck!)
  • You get to play a WHOLE WEEK EARLY ZOMG (:D)
  • Only $30 more than the $70 base game! LOL (work more hours!)
  • Doesn't include Season Pass 2 or any of the content we will be releasing that doesn't count as Season Pass 1 (fuck. you.)
There's a time and place for everything... but not now.

There's pros and cons I think. Certainly it sucks that treating loyal customers as beta testers is basically the norm now. We've let developers know we are their bitches by voting with our wallets.

But lets not also forget how you could easily run into completely game breaking bugs, exploits and other balancing issues in older games and there was literally nothing that would ever be done about it.

Remember proper box art? Like, box art that could make you want to keep the box, even though the game didn't need it for storage.

I bought a collection with a slip of paper that had a URL to the manuals for the games. I typed the URL in a browser and the website used to host the manuals was gone. When this happens you *really* miss the manuals. :(

Some games still have good box art. Good, but not epic (and not GoW, etc. EPIC).

We didn't really get complete games as much as we were just unaware of how much they cut out of said games.

You know what, let's talk about fighters, shall we?

Street Fighter 2 came with 8 characters. Then they released four more. You wanna know how much they charged for those four characters?

Actually, you couldn't buy them. Not by themselves. You had to buy the game again to get them.

There was also a balance patch. Which, again, you got by buying the game again.

You know, maybe none of us remember a day when you got a full complete game out of the box. We just remember a day when DLC and patches were an order of magnitude more expensive and distributed in the most appalling way imaginable.

Didnt all Street Fighter 2 release have balance fixes?
Besides, Capcom only made more versions because hacked arcade versions were really popular.

I think his point was that Turbo was just a balance patch. As in there weren't any added characters or anything. And that it came out less than a year after SF2CE.

Those days still exist, it's just mitigated by a bunch of P2W, Live Service cash grabs, and low effort mobile game money farms.

There are games out there which provide a complete experience for one price. Games like Baldur's Gate 3, Elden Ring, Tears of the Kingdom, Devil May Cry 5, and almost every decent indie game ever made.

The main problem is soulless AAA publishers forcing monetization and the intentional withholding of content as "day 1 DLC"

Going back and buying some complete SNES games is a joy, for the manuals as well as the posters a lot of them came with.

Hell, even the DS manuals were beefy as hell.

This is also kinda why its an L take because even games with Day 1 DLCs or season passes or even updates offer far more content then their predecessors.

Yah, they wont know the pain of game breaking bugs or random glitches or just the game as a whole not being updated.

Seriously though they arent really missing anything at all. Id rather buy a decent game that updates to being better than buying a decent game and being stuck with it. I play a lot of sports games so updates are pretty key.

Final Fantasy is a mess, it is a wonder that it runs at all.
Stats that doesnt work as intended, spells that doesnt work at all, weapons not working as intended, tents that saves before restoring your HP/MP so when you load your save you wont have full HP/MP, etc etc.

For starters, that isn't strictly true. That one N64 WWE game is probably the most famous example. You could mail in your cartridge and they'd send you the fixed version back.

For continuers, they were a lot less prone to ship them broken in the first place. Perhaps because patching wasn't considered a possibility so they followed more rigorous testing standards in-house, or perhaps because the games were simpler and consequently easier to test thoroughly.

Yet the reality is they were still broken games released to some extent.
