It was peak from 1999 to .... 2001, then very quickly died because of the shitty expansions that would make even the worst WoW expansions look good, among other things like the Kerafyrm raid blunder. People were so crazy about it it got the "EverCrack" nickname, but it didn't last long at all

WoW is still on top after 20 years somehow

idk, I'd say Final Fantasy 14 has usurped it in recent years

I'm more surprised that it's still around. The most recent expansion came out last December.

It was a raid boss that was intended to be basically unkillable, though it wasn't made outright invincible, it was just absurdly powerful

About 200 people formed a raid to kill it. It was an insanely long fight, and just as they were about to kill it... the devs despawned it. You could imagine the rage over that. They apologized and put it back, then they managed to kill it finally, after another 3 hour fight.

It soured a lot of the dedicated fanbase that was still with the game at the time, and pretty much was the final blow

What are their subs? Isn't wow still getting millions a month?

As for EQ I think they just never really had a plan, then started releasing new xpacs every few months.

Wow seems like they're going to start releasing annual expansions starting with their next one.

When I was in High School a group of my friends and I were talking about some random korean MMO, and one of my teachers came up to us and started talking to us about Everquest. I don't remember why but we kinda started shitting on her because of it right to her face. Now every time I see it I just think about how bad I feel about shittin on some poor teacher who was trying to relate to her students.

I looked it up. WoW apparently has 7.5 million active subs right now, while FF14 seems to have 2.5 million active subs >_>

At EverQuest's peak they only had 400,000 or 500,000 subscriptions. FFXI and WoW made them drop off after 2003-2004.

Old timey EQ was missing so many QoL improvements that it was ridiculous. There was a real sense exploration and adventure that has faded away in the genre.

Imagine spending 20 minutes shouting for a group in town before you try to do something or killing the same mob for days so that a rare monster would spawn and give you a chance to maybe get a rare piece of gear you're looking for. There were hours wasted simply because dungeons weren't instanced and you were waiting to kill your quest mob, which had very vague directions in game for finding because waypoints weren't abundant and guides were minimal.

It very much encouraged you to no life it. That's appealing for some, but not what the general population would be looking for. Most people want to just jump on and play.
I don't believe in belts. There should be no ranking system for toughness.

It wasn't really the expansion that did it. The community got split early on between it and FF11. Then WoW came along and fucking destroyed both of them. EQ1 had extremely high player retention to the point where EQ1 was more successful than EQ2.

You definitely should check more thoroughly. FF14 has about 17 million daily players. That counts free players as well subs but regardless it dwarfs WoW's player count by more than double.
If it was about babies we'd have universal maternal care. There would be no charge no matter how complex the delivery. But its not about babies, is it?

Only for 3 expansions. For now anyway. They announced a trilogy of expansions that will all come out within like 2 years I think. But nobody knows what they will do after the 3rd one
FFXIV and WoW nowadays trade back and forth between which is more popular, a lot of people seem to switch back and forth between them. When one goes dry in new content they switch to the other and back and forth.
The commercial says that Church isn't for perfect people, I guess that's why I'm an atheist.
Honestly, WoW imo was best in Vanilla mostly because it debuted with like 50~ zones ripe for exploration. I remember when I started playing I just wanted to explore rather than quest or level. So I just went around and grabbed all the flight paths at like level 15 or some shit. That was fun as hell, even though I died a bunch.

I feel like the problem with these new expansions is there's just not enough new content in them. They normally come out, have like 5-7 new zones with what, like 50 to 100 quests per zone, and that's it. Nothing will compare to Vanilla and having the ability to choose what zone to play next, because there were like 4 or 5 zones for each level area, so if you didn't like this place, just go to that place. I for one hated Thousand Needles, as I've always disliked multi elevation zones, so I skipped that and went somewhere else. You don't really get that ability anymore, Northrend had a bunch of different zones but I don't think any of the expansions after that offered enough variety. Maybe MOP, but I feel like two or three of those zones were pretty barren overall, especially on a play through last time I subbed when I reran the entire xpac.

Blizz just needs to hire more people to create more content for the game. Finish the unfinished zones next time. Cataclysm abandoned that underwater zone real quick, then Warlords of Draenor was like 25% completed from what they wanted to do, Legion was pretty packed full of content, but then BFA was a giant ass grind fest and then Shadowlands disappointed everyone with even more grind shit.

Simply hire more people to create more content. I remember in Dragonflight they'd tout this brand new big patch with new quests after like 2 months of nothing, and it was a questline you could complete in like maybe 30 minutes. All the hype for nothing.

Maybe it was this board I herd it from, but theyy released a mount around the same time as they released Starcraft 2 and the mount made more money for Blizz than the game.

It was a Diablo 4 mount. I'm pretty sure the WoW cash shop wasn't a thing when WoL released. I'm not even sure Token had been introduced yet either. WoL was a long time ago.
