Is Alien no longer an important franchise?
I think the Prometheus movies ruined it a bit

In what way?
The stupidity of the characters was very off-putting. Yes, let me remove my helmet on this alien planet. Yes, let me try and pet the alien creature coming out of the black ooze. Yes let's land on this random planet we know nothing about. Let's disturb the nature and sniff everything.

Don't forget Charlize Theron's character running in a straight line
Prometheus had a pretty damn cool OG script and the way they watered it down was crazy

That I could attribute to sheer panic. Cause I sure wouldn't be thinking straight either if a giant donut was rolling after me.

Sigs are rather pointless, except if it's to showcase animation and images.
Prometheus was fine. I hated the ending of Alien Covenant so, so much though.

Goddamn this topic made me go back and watch the worm scene, calling these characters stupid is an understatement
The creature has just lost its scare factor.
High time for something new.

Prometheus was a solid movie. We can nitpick about characters acting recklessly. Lets not forget the original

Expecting characters to act smart in an action/horror movie is just unreasonable. If people in movies were smart, most plots wouldn't happen.

That said, Prometheus is "fine," not particularly good. It had some neat scenes. Michael Fassbender was killing it.

It's just not being widely marketed yet. We have a teaser trailer and that's it. No one really cares yet.

I think the problem is it looks like a story we've already seen, multiple times.

At least Prometheus tried something new with the franchise.

1 - Alien on a ship
2 - Alien in a colony
3 - Alien in a prison
4 - Alien on a ship but with guns
Prometheus - Alien origin, kinda, but not really, but kinda, left on a great note leading to
Covenant - on a ship, but also planet, but also completely skipped through the parts we wanted the Prometheus ending to get to, not really explaining shit at all in the first place, why even make this fucking movie
Romulus - Alien on a ship...again...again.

And I loved Prometheus until after the credits rolled and I started talking about it with friends, like so much stupid shit happens that it's astonishing that these are the best Earth has to offer. Then Covenant was fine, but it just completely removed all mystery and intrigue from Prometheus by simply handwaving it all away. What's worse is it wasn't even a different director, Ridley Scott did both, how?
lolAmerica
honestly, haven't seen much advertisement for it. This place is about the only time I hear about it.
Covenant steering away from focusing on engineers and back into xenomorphs was disappointing.

The alien franchise has been a dumpster fire for longer than it's been good and I think at this point people are done giving it second chances. A new alien movie should probably get as much hype and attention as any other never-ending horror franchise.

I'm interested because of Fede Alvarez being the writer/director, and I think it could be one of the best ones.

But yeah, I can see how it would be hard to hype up the seventh in a film series (not counting AvP)

This. I've been angry at the franchise since Alien 3. Not because it wasn't a good movie, it was. I just preferred the direction the comics took the story as opposed to the route Alien 3 and then Resurrection took. Though I will say Ron Perlman was fucking great in Resurrection.

We really should have seen Engineers and Xenomorphs together.

I still don't even recall what the Engineers were running from in Prometheus, since it clearly wasn't xenomorphs.

Getting away from the engineers and what they did to shaw really soured covenant for me. I'm still interested in Romulus, but it honestly llooks like a retread of first movie.
i dont like the idea of the xenomoprhs being artificially created period no matter who did it

Ridley Scott saying he's getting old and on with life, and wanting to wrap up his Alien canon with some awesome but bugnuts lore was something I was 200% on board with. The prometheus rewrites are abysmal, and he didn't even have the balls to stand by his thrice-rewritten story in the sequel he directed.

In short he chickened out twice and instead made two hazy, inconclusive, garbage movies because he couldn't commit to his vision.

It made complete sense in the original scripts and was actually quite eerie. Master Geneticists make an oops, big time, is so much better than psychopathic robot fucks around and accidentally makes the damn things.

The reason this looks appealing to me is that it seems to be returning to stripped-down, claustrophobic horror, which is what I want from an Alien movie.

i do not give a fuck

them not being a natural species makes them less scary

humans think they are the ultimate species then they encounter this species and its superior to us

they are smarter than us and biologically superior to us

even advanced scifi weapons where inferior to them as shown in aliens

They were implied as weapons even in the first Alien film. Not a stretch to say they were not natural.

Literally the only good thing about Alien Covenant was Michael Fassbender's acting and the scenes where he plays alongside himself.

The problem with the xenomorph is that studios are afraid to let it be what it was designed to be. It's an invasive species that absorbs the DNA of its victims and takes on new forms as part of that. The problem is the original alien design became so iconic that now the very species whose defining trait is morphing is locked into like three forms.

to be fair its kinda hard to get a none human to a face hugger

if a xenomorph queen got on earth to lay eggs to get animals infected well thats game over for humanity

int heory you could maybe do a space station zoo

but well this could also run the risk of the games have where xenomorphs are fodderized

Alien and Aliens were killer
Alien 3 was... ok, with some problems
Resurrection was kinda dumb
Prometheus was bad

I gave up because I know how to extrapolate.
There's a difference between canon and not-stupid.

To be completely fair.... Their options were either run in a straight line under the rolling space ship, or move out of the way and die via the heavy rain of fire and debris.

Yeah, I'm guessing this is a significant factor.

I disagree. Take a look at Life. Yeah, the entire human race *not just the characters* were stupid as hell, but aside from a few very major instances (the flamethrower/fuel one being completely understandable), their stupidity did not drive the plot. A clusterfuck of worst-case scenario events (think Final Destination-lite) combined with the bad guy's invincibility and intelligence drove the plot. That said, some people complained about said clusterfuck.

Another great example imo is The Thing, where aside from maybe Clark who drank too much of the stupid juice, they were all operating on paranoia, desperation, or lack of understanding, all which are clearly distinct from stupidity.

Wasn't like the entire trouble of that movie caused by pretty much the crews own actions? It's been a while since I've seen it, and I know the lifeform does outsmart them a lot, but there were definitely some stupid decisions.
