Start using words like 'boyfriend/girlfriend' and 'relationship', and you're not.

just cus I've been on 4 dates with a girl doesn't necessarily mean we're in an exclusive relationship, I could be going on dates with other girls and she could date other people too.
if the two of us at one point say "ok, I want an exclusive relationship with you" and still go on dates, then I don't think that's considered single anymore.

like, I consider myself single, even though I've gone on 4 dates with the same girl recently (within a month we've been on 4 dates). I'm not gonna jump in and say she's my girlfriend because that hasn't even been talked about yet. I'd probably get a little jealous if she went out with another guy, but I wouldn't think "omg she's cheating" because neither of us has told the other "I want you to be my boyfriend/girlfriend and be exclusive"

I feel you should go over the "definition" of your relationship, just to make sure all parties are in agreement.

Once you decide to be "exclusive", you are obviously no longer single.

For legal purposes, yes. You are either single or married.

dating implies you see someone at least on an irregular basis
single implies you don't see anyone at all for any reason

dating is not the same as being in a relationship, either
there are three different stages here, not two

I would say ask the person you're dating.

Question: Are we a couple?
Response: No, we're just dating
Answer: Still single.

Question: Are we a couple?
Response: Yes we are, we're dating
Answer: Not single

Idk dude if I'm going to be dating someone, even if it might only be a few dates, I'm not gonna put time and effort into setting up dates with other people. Might not be single but also gonna explain that I'm seeing someone and am not available at that time

I think it's very regional. If I was going on dates with multiple people, I wouldn't refer to one as "this girl I'm dating". To me "dating" = "in a relationship". I would otherwise say "A girl who I've been on a few dates with".

But I know other people where it's the exact opposite.
