IMO the first 13 game is actually decent

its the sequels that made the rather simple story a mess

The 2nd game is better in almost every way compared to the first

I doubt it, I never hear anyone talk about the sequels and I've heard plenty of people bash the first game.

I hate time traveling mechanics in games
I thought the sequels actually made 13 better? The gameplay in both of them were lauded as improvements to 13 whereas the story was assuredly not.

Maybe. Oversaturation of an unlikeable character is definitely part of the 13 hate, so in that sense you're probably right. But 13-2 is leagues better than 13. I'll agree the story is messier, but that really doesn't matter because 13-2 is not about story the way 13 is, so it having a worse story than the already bad story in 13 does not hurt it the same way 13's bad story hurts it.
Gameplay in the second game is a massive improvement, but the story got even worst with the addition of the other 2 games. Sazh and Fang were the only likable characters in the cast.
DI MOLTO!
I played 20 to 25 hours of the FF13 and I cannot tell you anything about the story. I got to some larger open world grassy area, got yet ANOTHER battle tutorial for new battle skills it was still slowly drip feeding to me and I gave up. I stopped playing. The story absolutely did nothing for me because I cannot remember a damn thing about it lol.
I'm a long, long way from giving up

Its mediocre in every way possible. Having to recoup development losses and the developers having a boner for lightning are the only reason for the sequels. Might very well be the point where Final Fantasy died. Its been a mess ever since.

I've officially become the person where FFXIV is what I think of first when I think of Final Fantasy now.

I also quite liked FFXVI, but I still gotta play that 2nd DLC that just came out. I was gonna last week but I heard there was a patch coming to fix some issues so I decided to wait until then. (It's probably out now though hmm)

I actually liked FF13 a lot. And I like it more than the sequels.

I never finished 13 to get around to the sequels so it didn't change my view of it. The fact that it got 2 sequels though made me think a bit less of the FF series as a whole for a while.
Trying is the first step towards failure, so just dont give it a shot and you cant dissapoint.

12 was the last one I remember being a big deal when it came out. Even it was polarizing and wasnt quite as big a deal as previous games. None since have ever been an event or held gamings attention. Square Enix is all crybaby nowadays longing for their glory days. Never played 11 and tried 14, just not into MMOs myself. 15 and 16, meh. They say theyre all in on being multi platform now well see. They need to course correct hard.
If FF13 was less linear, and made the battle system more like Octopath it would be looked at more fondly. Because that's all Octopath is, FF13s battle system but it applies to all party members instead of just Lightning.
The only thing I could see title statement being true for was it not even bucking but just continuing the trend of some FF games getting sequels (since X-2 existed first).

As for XIII itself, my personal opinion is that I hated the trend it was furthering for the series, but on its own was an okay game.

At least half the story is in the story log, for some reason, and even there it's not presented linearly. And it's notoriously a 30 hour tutorial before the game actually opens up. Sounds like you stopped right where the game gets interesting.

I wish there was a FFXIII-2-Sazh edition. Sazh just going around telling people why they're wrong. Let him have some fun, too, maybe ride a chocobo.
