If we ever make contact with aliens and become part of a galactic community, would earth continue to keep seperate nations or would we become just an earth government, to represent all humans within a bigger galactic group? I feel like in that situation, nations might not make sense anymore
There'd probably be some UN sort of multinational organization formed to handle interplanetary relations on Earth's behalf. Meanwhile the nations of the planet would keep blowing each other up and probably forming individual alliances with other planets too.

Stargate touches on things like this and it doesn't go well at all.
Nani?!?
In Star Trek they're basically not allowed to make first contact unless they have world peace + warp drive.

The US is a nation of squabbling children under a single federal system. I imagine it would just be one more layer of the same.

I think this is a question for the aliens.

Would the aliens want to deal with 700 different factions on Earth, or would they say "get yo your shit together than we'll talk."
Starfire: "They are too numerous to fight. What shall we do?"
Robin: "Fight anyway!" (pb)
Think about it

You got the entirrrrrrrre cosmos out there

Why would anyone be fighting? (Not saying it doesn't happen)
no galactic community would accept us until we got our shit together

Imagine humans being part of any galactic society, we can barely stand the society we have now without killing each other. Humans prob be demanding shit they probably shouldnt have than trying to go to war when they dont get it.

I think any galactic community would enforce a quarantine on our planet/system to make sure our toxic and destructive behaviour doesn't infect the rest of the galaxy.

wasn't even just an episode, it was an entire plotline.

the more advanced races wanted nothing to do with humans until they saved the Asgard from the replicators and showed they could actually be a threat to the Goa'uld

No.

Simple as that.

Even if they attain, or change to, something more like a territory or state, they will be a thing.

The primary exception is settings that have basically DESTROYED the planet.

Like, say, Warhammer 40k which somehow destroyed/removed the oceans and such during a dark period of history. And which a hero's story (the Emperor revealing himself and saying "fuck this I need to lead them myself after all") is the way the planet then unified afterwards.

I guess Helldivers works too, though I know basically nothing of their lore aside from the basic concept. For Democracy! They say, while having a feel-good description yet everyone doesn't vote, they just take quizes that ascertain who should be in charge. Actually a very good idea... if we could trust humans to not do bad things, including humans in high place.

I was referring to an episode where some advanced race gave a primitive planet the technology to make unlimited energy and they blew up their own planet in the process after they started a war over it.

oh yeah, the Tollans. Earth would definitely destroy itself if we had that tech now too

although they did keep refusing to give Earth technology even after they were allies

I think they can make contact without world peace, they just can't join the Federation.

Yeah I remember they kept asking for tech and were told "no dude we know what happens when we do this"

Nope. We'll probably get a Halo like UNSC thingy going, but Earth would not collectively join forces

yup. it was years until they finally shared defensive technology with Earth and that was only after SG-1 saved their entire civilization

There's an OC fanfic sort of thing I read (Jenkinsverse) that does that.

Humanity is largely represented by a specific coalition, and a massive chunk of the alien population doesn't realize that the coalition only represents like <10 countries.

Aliens would be more likely to cruise by in secret, point, and laugh at the stupid animals killing each other and their own planet.

this is the way I see it most likely going down. presenting a front of being unified under a single organization/entity/whatever when in actuality if anyone looks closer they'll immdiately realize that's not the case at all.

Like, in some sense there already is a "earth government" that would "represent all humans" in a galactic context. The united nations. nearly every country is part of it
THIS IS WHAT I HATE A BOUT EVREY WEBSITE!! THERES SO MUCH PEOPLE READING AND POSTING STUIPED STUFF
I was about to answers yes when it struck me that some nations would ally with the aliens.

Chances are good that some nations would declare perpetual armed defiance.

Would suck if the galactic civilization believed in mass punishment.

See, this is why snakes in your head is actually a good idea; Their hyper-efficient immune systems would have rendered them immune to such novel concerns. Don't delay, get a snake in your head now! eyes glow
