i first started reading jojos around 2010, 2011. my friend was playing a dio brando inspired character in DND and wouldnt shut up about how he'd beat superman, so i began reading it to prove him wrong

little did i know that jojo begins as one of the purest, most perfectest shonen manga of all time. the designs, the nonsense powers, the stakes, the hero, the villain

everything

i was instantly hooked

part 2 somehow took this even further and became one of the best things ever

part 3 added stands. i wasnt a huge fan of stands, but things were still kind of straightforward...just with a twist. plus the supporting cast fucks hard, the bad guy is back, the second jojo is back, and the new jojo fucking ruled

then part 4 happened

and it started slowing down. characters were less interesting. even returning characters werent as fun to read. and characters began getting...smaller, thinner, shorter. oh no.

then part 5 and 6, the twinkification continues hardcore. old characters are assassinated in the name of stakes. new characters are personalityless sacks. monster of the week like in part 3, except soon nearly every fight becomes confusing

whatever, its fine. im a fan, ill keep reading. then part 6 ends

man.

then part 6 ends

well it cant go downhill from here i figured, illtry 7 and see how it goes

holy shit! its like parts 1, 2 and 3 all in one! its amazing! i love the heroes, the villain is looming and neat, the enemies and journey progression feel like a return to form, a strong one. the art is fully twinkified by now but thats ok, because this is a new universe. everyones face is starting to blend together but thats fine

then part 8

oh boy part 8

the mystery stuff had me interested. soft & wet had me interested. the bizarre subversions of names and locale had me interested

then it kept going

and going

and going

i stopped somewhere by 2016 or 2017, id had enough. it was no longer what i liked

and its now bigger than ever. i was so stoked to watch parts 1.thru 3 on the anime when they came out though. hype city

now jojo has more fans than ever and im not one of them. its a weird morose feeling. not sure how to describe it. i guess we both moved on

I didn't even finish part 8. I just straight up stopped caring, it's similar to how I felt about star wars after watching The last Jedi

I dont like part 8 much but I heavily disagree about part 4 having less interesting characters, and part 5 is outright one of of my favorites.

Part 9 so far has been much faster paced, less monster of the week, and gives its characters more personality, stands are simpler yet still creative and not the esoteric triggers part 8 were, it's definitely closer to part 7 imo. The big intro arc just finished and they're starting the main infiltration so I recommend giving these first 11 chapters a shot.

tbf the 1st (few chapters honestly) in part 7 were pretty bland too. The other protagonists didn't get any characterization in Chapter 1.

back when i read jojo, up to like, part 4

i would think of the main character as "jojo"

so in part 1 i would default jonathan to jojo, part 2 joseph to jojo, part 3 jotaro to jojo, etc

i stopped doing that sometime in part 4. i really miss that actually

I mourn Jojolion because I believed in Araki and I think he completely fucked it up. Twinkification of Jojo was fine though and part 7 is one of the greatest manga ever made. Even part 8's run time would be forgivable if Araki stuck it through with Jobin, but IDK what happened with his thought process, but he basically threw away every string he could've otherwise tried to tie together.

I'm not actively reading The Jojolands but it's so cool how Araki mindbroke every conservative fan by putting covid, Dua Lipa, and a gender non-conforming Joestar sibling in chapter 1.

I mean it pretty much stopped in-universe in part 3 as well. Nobody really regularly refers to Jotaro and later Jojos as Jojo.

Best hero/villain stand dynamic BTW. The guy who can destroy anything running into the guy who can fix anything. A part of Jojo peaks at this page.

Part 4 had some of the most impactful if only because the story had time to actually mourn them unlike most of the other parts.

Part 5 was pretty bad and it doesn't help how terrible a MC Giorno is. Part 6s ending though I personally didnt like and killed the whole franchise for me up till then.

I hated how part 4 made Joseph into a cheater. Felt unnecessary. Dont do my man Joseph like that.

I also didn't like the slice of life shit, just wasn't what I wanted from the series. I'm an anime only fan and pt 1 and 4 are my least favorite easily. But pt 1 was good enough to get me to watch pt 2 so that's saying something I guess.

I actually really like Giorno and part 5. Its probably the part with the least amount of downtime between major fights, but it makes the threat of the mafia and assassins feel real.

Ok I love JJBA but this opinion is simply madness

Even if it's Part 3 DIO that can stop time, Supes moves so fast naturally that the time stop probably wouldn't even register to him and he'd just punch DIO to death anyway. Putting that aside I'm pretty sure DIO can't actually do anything that would hurt Superman to begin with.
I think the friend watches an internet series called "Death Battle". They encourage some really absurd power scaling by trying to argue that the way a panel is drawn in the Polnareff vs Hanged Man arc proves he's actually faster than light (despite the whole arc being about how he's not lol). From there they say that The World's punches must have psi to be like nuclear bombs.

Hard disagree.

4 = 7 > 2 > 5 > 6 > 3 > 1

Never finished 8. It seemed okay but monthly releases are horrible for a mystery series.
Part 8 is the only part that was kinda eh for me. I liked Josuke II and all (especially the fact that he always went immediately for the kill. No exceptions) but the story just kept going and going and then it just ended.

Also maybe it's because I read Golden Wind instead of waiting for the anime but I swear Bucciarati was the real Jojo of that part.

This but for Iggy instead of Avdol . Up until that point, Polnareff was my favorite non-Jojo Crusader but I was ready to disown him if he let Vanilla Ice get away with it.

Giorno was the only character I had an issue with along with diovola. Aside from his personality or lack there of his stand(not requiem)was OP as hell. With a wide variety of abilitys compared to most other stands in the series.

So its not a surprise why he didnt fight very much. Frankly as a MC Bucciarati made far more sense. Both in character and stand ability.

I'm about 30 chapters or so into part 3 and I'm finding it to be incredibly lackluster compared to part 2. Doesn't feel like any of the characters have chemistry the way Joseph and Caesar did, and the villain of the week popping up just to show off the new (at the time) concept of stands feels incredibly fucking lame compared to the Pillar Men

Also, none of the art so far seems to go nearly as hard as some of what was shown in part 2. I mean look at this shit

I can safely say Part 9 is starting off really really well. It's going for a "heist" type of genre before it eventually becomes the typical "battle shonen" with stand powers. The characters have great chemistry with each other, though some do fall into the typical "tropes" though.
DI MOLTO!
I'm kinda torn on Part 8

The main villain's Stand is cool as fuck but he's lame and the fight wasn't all that great

It didn't help that Part 8 already had a really good villain. His name was Jobin.

Also for such a female-heavy cast 99% of them fuck off after one arc. Even the Higashikata women are reduced to screaming and crying in the last arc Kaato not included

It had some raw fights like the A.Phex Twins and it had some great characters like Kei and Daiya but I don't think it ever found the way to tie it all together
Not changing this part until Saki Amamiya (or Isa Jo) gets into Smash as a playable character
Now watching: Urusei Yatsura 2022 S2, Nichijou
Part 8 is a mess. I still don't get why the Rock Men can't coexist with the humans but that they're a bunch of greedy dudes getting killed off one at a time. Jo2ske S&W stand power was incredibly unique, but at some point it just does whatever is convenient to win. The main baddy's stand was so cheap that Araki had to, once again, invent some kind of Deus Ex Machina to beat it you see the soap bubbles aren't actually bubbles, but it's the SPIN from Part 7! The story was also interesting...until all the mystery was gone and it became "gimme da fruit" story. Part 8 was also the biggest wasted potential for the side characters (Yasuho being the biggest offender) because Jo2ske basically stole all the spotlight. The Higashikata family barely did anything and any feats they did with their stands felt lame. Araki did a disservice to himself introducing Rai too late to the story. Overall the arc felt very unsatisfying, something I can't say when comparing it to the other Jojo arcs. I'm hopefuly Part 9 will be able to fix it.
