If their issue with Tiktok is data could be given to Chinese, then why not make a law banning all data collection of that type. A Chinese government official can't do much with my data, an American company can .

Because they have investments in those same companies. Your data makes them more money.

Because TikTok has also proven to openly lie to Congress about their data collection:

Since 2020, TikTok executives have repeatedly tried to reassure people that Chinese staff cannot access the data of non-Chinese users.

But in 2022, ByteDance admitted that several of its Beijing-based employees did access the data of at least two journalists in the US and UK to track their locations and check whether they were meeting TikTok employees suspected of leaking information to the media.

data collection and sale probably makes major sites as much(or more than) money as ads do at this point.
