Play the remakes of 1 and 2 on DS. You will hate yourself playing the originals. That bump fighting is bad and way too many games used it. The rest gets hard. Origins would be a good starting point. I've only played origins,1-3. Too many systems over too many years. I believe Steam has the most in one place

1 then 2 first, and then order doesn't matter. Only one not worth playing is Ark of Napishtim.

Steam has all of them.
I would play As, Bs, Cs, Ds, Es, Fs, Gs, Hs, Is, Js, Ks, Ls, Ms, Ns, Os, Ps, Qs, Rs, Ss, Ts, Us, Vs, Ws, and Xs first. Then Ys. You want to play them all before the final game Zs. That's the only way the ending will make sense.
You know how fads are. Today it's brains, tomorrow, pierced tongues. Then the next day, pierced brains.

Gameplay order/release order. Genuinely.

With Steam's offerings, you go in this order:
I+II Chronicles+ > VI: Ark of Napishtim > Oath in Felghana > Origin > Seven > Memories of Celceta > VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA > IX: Monstrum Nox > X: Nordics (coming later this year)

Good luck actually beating I, though, the final boss is genuinely bullshit and it might be better to Youtube the ending if you can't get beat it.
VI is very rough, as a warning, being the first one of that gameplay style with some certain very obnoxious aspects.

Don't worry about the games referencing to each other. In this order you get pretty much all the context except for VIII and IX's references to V, which is only on SNES and desperately needs a remake, and notoriously considered the worst Ys game anyway so no harm in skipping it.

Any of them really. They're all self contained stories with only a few minor references to other games.

My starting point was 8 and that is still my favorite.

pick one and go, they're largely self-contained stories and there's no significant lore you'll miss by doing it ("Adol is a wandering swordsman, here is the shenanigans he's gotten himself into this week. Also Dogi is here." Boom, you have All the Context)

It's actually kind of weird how many sealed ancient evil gods and ruined kingdoms he keeps tripping into, if you think about it

it's the best. but you'll then realize that all the other games are different and not as good.

I second Origins
move all remaining groundhog mercenaries to the front lines. Have sheep troopers squadrons A and B flank the cows. They're using DC-17 hoof blasters.
Ys Origin definitely

You are right somewhat. Also how many time he let's put in a isolated area. Say shipwrecked etc

Of the ones you listed, Oath in Felghana. You may as well start strong.

And don't worry about going 'in order' it just doesn't matter for any of them other than I & II.
I will rule the world, and find that truly good cup of coffee.
I think there are virtual console version if you really wanna play the old versions of Ys 1 and 2.

Origins is not good

"You know, there are certain flaws in this film," Tom Servo
Origins is just kind of a slog to beat it 3 times just to get the true ending. But at least the last run is kinda busted damage wise.

Whoever named the series Ys clearly wasn't thinking about how the fuck would you Google search this game
