I mean, all the content that's created isn't necessarily from "us", but the content that we make is undeniably awful often, if not usually. Same w/ reality tv and idiot streamers doing stupid shit out in public, or especially in other countries.

My implication is that, regardless of China's insane restrictions, they know that much of this content is harmful, and wouldn't allow it to be viewed, but they'll gladly serve it to us (especially young people) in all you can eat format.

These are words straight out of a CCP activist's lol.

Potentially worth noting that the largest campaign donation contributor to the author of the original TikTok ban bill (which was pretty much copied and pasted into the aid bill as an amendment) was *drumroll please* AIPAC.

Also he announced that he was going to resign from office, but extended his withdrawal date until April 20th specifically so he could vote for this bill, as amended by the House.

This is the same thing as the not actually a ban right? The one where they just need to not be owned by a Chinese company that has to let China access all their data if China asks right?
Theyve already moved the severs from china to the US. So this is all about the goverment just inserting a puppet as head to control its content.

The shit post side of me wants to say yay, but the reality is the reasoning they're using is very stupid. "National security" when it is known that even American social media apps sends their information over to the government as well.

You seem really invested in letting China do whatever they want.

Somehow everythjng they do is someone elses fault.

I'm copy pasting my posts from when I had this exact same dialogue in the past. Unfortunately, the site I'm using doesn't support unicode. Since nobody mentioned a typo there I'm going to go with it being a unicode error instead of a simple typo.

For everyone that doesn't seem to understand how bad TikTok is, here are just a few things -

Tiktok pushing self-harm content via algorithm
https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2023/apr/04/how-tiktoks-algorithm-exploits-the-vulnerability-of-children

One former employee alleging that TikTok user information is not safe from China
https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/03/10/tiktok-data-whistleblower-congress-investigators/

Another employee, this time w/ more evidence -
https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/16/24132315/tiktok-bytedance-project-texas-china-silo

TikTok is uniquely awful, even for social media. It's awful in virtually every way, and there's nothing good that it provides that can't be handled by another existing site / app.

It is not uniquely awful. Nazis literally get endorse on Twitter and the racism goes thru the roof. You no why TikTok is the only thing targeted.
Biden is the greatest President ever.
Hardly any experience with TikTok personally.
I've heard it's where some silly/ harmful ideas originate(maybe?) like eating tide pods or cooking chicken in nyquil.
Not that those can't originate on a different platform.

I do have to cringe though when my obese friend says he's going to follow some random guys diet on tiktok to lose weight instead of actually seeking reputable help.
Peacefully non-compliant/non-conformist
For the record I do think they should be harsher on enforcing user privacy on every site like the EU did. But sadly it seems they're doing the opposite.

Pretty much for every bad thing you can find on TikTok you can find something 1000x worse on Twitter.

That same content is also on TikTok - as well as the issues I've already outlined. TikTok's algorithm and the way it feeds content, especially to young people, is much worse than any other site.

And, as I've said multiple times, I'm not excusing or giving passes to any of the American / non-Chinese companies, they all need to be hit hard as well.

Look by all means form your own opinion on this. Or more likely have Tiktok form it for you.

But regardless of whether you are right, left or center, your elected representatives who are significantly more informed than you agree that this is harmful without making any sort of judgement on whether the app is good or bad.

Which is why it will get spun off by Byte Dance like good little capitalists.

That was mostly a courtesy statement.

Even Republicans can understand the threat when briefed by their staff and national security experts.

Democrats understand basic governance.

Republicans supported January 6th. They don't give a shit about national security or even their own security, or the security of their staff. The vast majority of the ones who claimed didn't bowed down to those responsible in the days and weeks afterward any way. They were all running from people who were shouting "hang Mike pence" and beating the shit out of police officers for hours and then turning around and acting like none of that happened.

Is that why far more Republicans voted for the bill than Democrats with most of the younger reps opposing it?

Republicans connecting dots is how we got Roe v Wade overturned because they don't want people to have abortions after birth. And 10 year old rape victims being forced to travel to different states to have abortions. And women being forced to give birth to non-viable fetuses. And women getting prosecuted for having miscarriages. And January 6th. And Dominion and Smartmatic getting defamed to hell and back. And Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss having their entire lives destroyed based on bullshit. And people trying to storm vote counting centers based on bullshit. And thousands people committing crimes on Donald Trump's behalf and being sent to prison.

The time to ban tiktok was during the pandemic. It quickly turned into lets film public service workers and humiliate them online without getting their permission! It literally made people not want to work over here and thats when they should have done away with it.
I hate TikTok because it's dumb and annoying but the government should not have the power to ban entire platforms.

Social media like TikTok does need some sort of regulation. You can tell who on CE gets all their news from TikTok and their mindset is just bizarre and unhealthy from being told what to think
Never used TikTok, even though some friends tried to get me into it. Doesn't mean I support the government telling private companies how to operate.

Just like I didn't want DeSantis telling Disney how to operate their business and using the government to attack them.
