The
it's part of the game to adjust to the umpires strike zone instead of having a standard one. baseball is already slow enough and stuff malfunctions. you want them to postpone the game every time the robot ump crashes? you watch the lakers game a few weeks ago when they spent freaking 20 minutes trying to get the shot clock to work before finally giving up?

Fun fact: The broadcast overlay of the pitch strike zone is NOT the actual strike zone. In fact, when two different broadcast teams and their two different cameras catch borderline pitches, one will deem it a ball and another a strike due to the different angles at which the cameras see the zone. This is proof that there is no accounting for parallax angles on the broadcast -- and why would there be, especially local broadcasts. See:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qfc2miYm2hU

You would probably need some sort of tacking technology in the uniforms for it to be truly accurate. it isn't like the tennis thing which is measuring against a static, unmoving line. The strike zone is constantly moving as the batter adjusts their stance. Moreover, it's different for every different batter.

Pet peeve about the broadcast overlay: Since they aren't true strike zones, they can and do negatively influence the audience perception of the ball and strike. They take the graphic as gospel. There was a seemingly egregious called-ball today that appeared middle-up in the zone. Remove the zone, and it's actually right on the borderline of the true strike zone, because of the batter's unique stance (way more hunched over at the last moment). Still a borderline call, but not as egregious as people on the interwebs are saying it is. Because the strike zone graphic is far too tall.

I voted human umpires though a scenario where Super Baseball 2020 is real world be bad ass. Also robots can be programmed for evil too just as well as humans have their own judgments or being vindictive.

*In robot voice* time to set the crackers. Lol in that game there would just be land mines set in the outfield where if a fielder stepped on one he'd get stunned.

even if robots can be programmed to be evil, you can just flip the little switch on their back to set them back to good. and they won't try and sue the mlb if you don't let them officiate important games.

Flutter, I'll concede to the point that robots haven't figured out how to sue, yet.

Accountability for awful umpires that make calls on emotion like Angel Hernandez, when it's obvious to the entire baseball world.

The fact that people like him still have a job is the problem. Crack down hard on bullshit like him, and other umps that are shit at their jobs before we try a digital approach is my opinion.

I do remember Jim Joyce messed up and cost Gallaraga a perfect game, but baseball can be a fast sport and he felt really bad about it.

That was 2010, I haven't been following baseball much lately. Shit I guess Joey Votto is on the Blue Jays now, but mistakes do happen. It's not always something sinister though my mindset isn't what it used to be.

Ehhhhhh, with now many crappy umpires there are nowadays, I do lean a bit more towards robo-umps, or at least making more of their calls reviewable. I think the minors experimented with robo-umps already, so if it succeeded, I'd expect to see it down the line. The umpires' union would fight tooth and nail against it, though, haha.

Naw, he rolled his ankle and didn't end up making the roster. Maybe we can still get him back at the trade deadline as we kill it in the playoffs!

First time I saw this. lol

I remember the Orioles having some type of Earl Weaver tribute day where he and past players came out and there was stuff happening on the field. My brother got stung in the mouth by a yellow jacket and started crying nonstop so we had to leave early. My dad was so fucking pissed. No concern for my brother's sting, just that he missed Earl Weaver. I still have the Earl Weaver bobblehead they were giving out.

But the umpire would still be there. He'd still be standing behind home plate. He would just be relaying the actual ball or strike call instead of judging it for himself.

I think robo umps are inevitable because the umpire mistakes are just too noticeable and too egregious on modern broadcasts to be tolerated. I definitely would miss the entertainment value of arguing balls and strikes though. And it's pretty hilarious how angry some fans get at the umpires.

I wanted robot umpires yesterday after watching Max Fried pitch himself out of a jam against the Phillies with a pitch right down the middle only to have it called a ball gifting 3 runs in the first inning. One of the worst ball calls Ive ever seen.
