One coworker was talking on the phone with their spouse about getting a bigger refrigerator.

Then a british coworker jokes that it's such a streotypically american conversation to talk about refrigerator size.

...i don't think I ever even hear people talk about refrigerators though, this is bewildering lol

Yes, keeping your food cold and or frozen is stereotypical of Americans. /s

I could see those big two-door suburban fridges being an American stereotype, in line with the big houses.
How quaint.
British properties are sold by amount of bedrooms and not how big they are.
In some cities in Britain, you literally have places with rooms smaller than refrigerators being sold.

It's this.

I've seen a lot of European momfluencers coveting them or making big videos when they finally got one because their fridges are what a lot of Americans would consider a mini-fridge.

Lol, Americans call the cold-i-box a refrigerator?
I look at a lot of realtor sites that show properties all over the world and we certainly on average have much bigger refrigerators. Many in other countries are quite small. As side note other countries often put washer and dryer in the kitchen and many in the States always comment how strange they find that.

You act as if you don't fingerbang the ice dispenser to break it in, like everyone else does.

We do that at my house. I think every kitchen here outside of an apartment has a spot for this. You really don't need a very big fridge in Japan. Also Americans tend to buy a huge pile of groceries all at once whereas we like to get fresh stuff a few times a week.

Anything more than a two-shelf refrigerator is a gauche and uncouth display of self-aggrandisement.

Yeah, that's how they are called at my place in german too. Normal fridge was the size of a nightstand, usually with a freezer on top/under it.

And then you have the big ass double-door closet of an american fridge.

But I think this is an mostly outdated term by now, since fridges are now much bigger on average.
Planning is the process of replacing chance with error.
If anything, most people have a secondary fridge in their garage.
Those two door fridges are sold as 'American style' in the UK.

I don't think I've ever had a significant conversation with anyone of any nationality about fridges.

I hope you never have to either. What a massive waste of time.
