This sounds like one of those things where it's just semantics that paint a misleading picture. Kinda like how they keep redefining obesity to make Americans fatter and fatter on paper.

For example, car break-ins have gotten so bad in parts of the country that people en masse are leaving their car doors open so thieves can rummage through and discover there's nothing to steal without breaking a window to do it. If breaking a window is a crime, but looking in an open door isn't, the numbers would go down, wouldn't they?
Or you can stop trying to lean on semantics in an attempt to discard data.

Could also be less crimes being reported sadly. Some crimes are underreported (sexual assault is the major one), that Im not sure I want to trust this study just yet. More in-depth details would be nice

I love how certain people only want to talk about the real or hidden numbers of the economy or crime, only when a Democrat is president.

When a Republican is president, and the economy or crime is doing great, crickets on those hidden numbers. There isn't talks about unreported numbers.

The moment a Democrat is president, all of a sudden the numbers are sus, and we should be talking about unreported unemployment or crime.

Amazing how that works. Just like how they can take hundreds of thousands of new jobs created and just handwave it all away because Best Buy says it's closing stores across the country.

Car break ins is only one type of crime. And yes it is one that's going up. When it comes to total numbers it's all the crimes together.

Now they do need to crack down on car break ins as yeah that's a problem that needs to be dealt with.

Oh, I never believe any good news. People suck regardless of who's sitting the oval office. I don't get why Americans blame/praise the president personally for literally everything that happens anyway.

And by across the country it means stores in poor locations that can't actually compete with the local Walmart.

Or some other form of overexaggeration to make it look like a far bigger concern that it is purely to dismiss reality.

Yeah or those stories of Target closing some stores in high crime areas where if you look more into the story they actually closed under preforming stores while keeping open ones where more shoplifting occur because they are more profitable.

What constitutes a minimum wage violation? I could see things like servers not being paid enough if they don't make tips, but for that much theft there has to be a lot more than that which I can't think of atm. lol

Tipped workers who aren't paid the state/federal minimum wage of 7.25+ if tips are short. Contrary to many Americans popular belief, tipped workers are not actually allowed to just be paid less than 3 dollars if tips are short. Some employers take advantage of that misconception or weaponize firing staff, but it's definitely illegal for the employer to not cover tips being less than the state/federal wage of 7.25+.

Non tipped workers not being paid. Even non tipped workers face the above issues of threats and not being paid in some places.

Migrants who are paid under the table. Same deal as the above 2, but with the added bonus that they are likely illegal immigrants. Therefore they also get the added bonus of threats of being deported on top of being fired. That or the illegal migrant is exploited for the fact that they really don't have great options to work elsewhere given their citizenship.

After all, tips are not wages. An employer shouldn't be able to adjust anyone's pay based on the amount of tips collected.

Likely stems from the Republican narrative of "we're tough on crime and Dems are weak on crime", even though we know that's not the case in the grander scheme of things.

It's astounding how deeply ingrained Republican propagandist narrative are within this country's populace. The average person still thinks they're the "party of fiscal responsibility", unless that's finally started to change.

What?
Its in Freakonomics. Legal abortion majorly contributed to the decline in crime rate because most people who need one come from lower income households (most, not all).

Theres a lot of psychological studies behind children growing up in poverty with no funds to support their education turning to illegal actions, big and small.

If you have access to abortion to avoid this scenario, it drops the crime rate drastically.

To some extent, it's not about the stats, it's about the vibe. It feels like things are getting worse and we hear about it more. Feelings don't care about your facts.

That's not what I have see. I have only seen the opposite. That Republicans only care about stats when they are in office. Democrats tend to.always care. As they are less about making themselves look good and more about making the country look good.

If you don't trust the numbers when a democrat is in office that's a you problem but in reality the people watching them tend to not have a political bias. Your just placing one on them. Give me an example of the states changing dramatically depending on which party is in the white house. It isn't happening. Crime dropping has been consistent since the seventies regardless if a democrat or Republican is in office no one on the left denies that.

In my experience democrats want to praise republicans, want to point out the good things they still do as an olive branch move. Not every dam mind you but old schools ones, which makes up most of the party? Yes. Give me an example of the numbers being ignored when a republican is in office since you think it happens.

Literally the last president.....

When Obama was president, Republicans claims the economy was awful, and unemployment was sky high despite unemployment being so low. Fox and conservatives constantly talked about how the reported unemployment numbers was not the true unemployment level and that it was much worse than the reported numbers.

The moment Trump became president they all of a sudden forgot these true unemployment numbers and started singing oraise to how great the economy was week one of Trumps presidency. The man didn't even pass anything and they were crediting Trump.
