This is a stupid conversation I had with a boomer at work (early 60s is considered a boomer, right?). I don't even work with this guy, but he's in the company break room at the same time as me during my breaks. He goes off on some rant about how minorities get preferential treatment on a lot of things nowadays, and that Gen Z is more likely to give people of color a chance in the spotlight just for being a minority. I argued that while that's true, white people still generally have an easier time at life than anybody else. Nobody else in the break room wanted to engage in the conversation, but I feel like I'm right. I have a hard time believing that lives are not overall easier for white people, but is that false?

I haven't seen any white people so idk
My maid will hear about this.
I think it likely is true that white, hetero folks (us) can be on the receiving end of discrimination.

But that doesn't mean abandoning concern or acting like everyone else is on easy street.

And I've said before that apathy can be just as bad. Such as dismissing concerns about discrimination until it becomes your (Not you TC) problem.

Treated better by whom?

I mean, in a country where White people--White men, in particular--still encompass the highest, most influential positions in the country, of course White people--White men, especially--will be treated better than other groups of people.

This is fairly obvious, yeah

I'd say that things have definitely gotten better, in the past 15 years even, but it's still a very big problem.
Agree with this, and it goes for Canada too.

The one advantage we have over Europe is that there isn't really white on white racism on this side of the pond, but it's still definitely a white male dominated society.

The majority of people at work can always sense subjects that are a good way to end up in HR.

Yes white privilege is a thing. So is white fragility.
shut up and take my money
I noticed black managers/supervisors at my former job treated black employees worse than whites. Talked to them any kind of way and were more respectful to white employees.

I'm sure there's some social reason for that I don't understand.
This is where cool people write stuff.
Absolutely. But some conservatives are convinced that minorities get preferential treatment because of things like Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) and Affirmative Action. Like those assholes that blamed Boieng's manufacturing error on DEI hires. Claiming that unqualified staff were hired in the name of diversity.

But the reality is that for generations, qualified minorities and women were skipped over for job opportunities in favor of white men. DEI is only an attempt to counter discriminatory practices. It doesn't put unqualified people into jobs and it doesn't treat minorities better than white people.

Sadly this would have just reinforced his beliefs.
There's only one demographic capable of overthrowing our government and I think we all know which one.
