DC is better overall for a "casual" follower. You can just pick a Batman and/or Superman cartoon and for the most part you don't need to worry about getting dragged into a dozen different team-ups until they go and switch to a dedicated Justice League incarnation. There are some exceptions like Brave and the Bold, but even that one was basically a "team up of the week" series a lot of the time.

The closest Marvel has to this sort of "casual follower/reader" hero is Spiderman. But even he usually starts getting caught up in SHIELD things pretty quickly. To say nothing of his later stage stories where its a multiverse with however many spider versions they want to have.

Fantastic 4 is also usually more decent at remaining self-contained too, I suppose Plus they have the iconic Doom (as an enemy) so they are a pretty good team-from-the-get-go too.

Hercules has been bi for a long time, some of his "super close friends" have been Northstar , Hylas, James Howlet...
Marvel actually turned him straight in 2015 with their ANADM story line.

I forgot about the context, like thinking of it like that. It would really lean towards her turning him guy. Since gay guys can find women hot. They just don't want do stuff with them.

Unless there have been changes made to Nightcrawler's character over the years, I like the idea that the devout Christian of the X-Men has LGBTQ parents.

If I were in charge of MCU X-Men, I would start out with Mistique already married and on good terms with her son. Maybe there were some abandonment issues in the past (and maybe a prequel or flashback could address them), but everything is fine now. With regards to religion, there's no elephant in the room. Nothing to be addressed. It isn't "even though he's a Christian, he doesn't discriminate against LGBTQ people." It's just there as a model for how things should be. She's gay, she chooses whatever physical form she likes, and everyone's cool with it except for the conservative politician.
