Russia has recently assassinated people who did the morally right thing and abandoned their duty/turned themselves into Ukraine. One was a helicopter pilot living in Spain.
If Russia really wanted to kill them they would, however I do think mere protesting is too much of a hassle, just pointing out the fact they're in NYC doesn't mean much.
