I can hear you now, "Pssssh but Neon "Titty Meister" Octopus, why bother when those professional 911 nerds can do it better than I ever could?"

I'm gonna give you a timeline:
-You're hanging out with a family member and leave the room for 1 minute. You come back and see them on the floor.
-You call 911 and explain what happened. That's another minute.
-911 has to process the call and allocate the available and appropriate units. That's 2 minutes.
-We get receive the call and gotta make our way over there, that can take like 3 minutes or more depending on traffic conditions

That's at least 7 minutes where no circulation is going on in their body. Brain damage starts at 6 minutes >_>

But if you know CPR, you can hop on that motherfucking chest right away and circulate blood into their organs and slow down brain damage by a lot before the pros get there. So learn CPR.

"Cool! Which organization should I get it from?"

I'm sure all of them are fine. But most healthcare professionals use American Heart Association. Generally classes are 4 hours and good for 2 years. Sometimes you can find refresher classes to renew your cert that's cheaper and shorter too.

"What happens if I don't have mouth protection? I don't want to get herpes from Aunt Ellen >_>"

Then don't give them air >_> The chest compressions are so much more important. Don't endanger yourself unless you actually know they're clean; just go 100% on the chest then.

Thus concludes my PSA from your resident Titty Meister. Learn CPR >_> I've brought back too many people that just become brain dead cuz they got no treatment before we got there. Learn it. Love it. Live it.

It really does matter for me and thank god I did so I can prepare for anything.

It actually happen to my 4 year old sister on a food she choked. She Almost died with her face turning blue. I didn't know how to CPR and all I could do was call the cops freaking out. (I was 17 at the time)

If it wasn't for my neighbor who came to the rescue (works for a hospital and knew cpr)
I think she would've died leaving me traumatized. He saved her life before cops even arrive.
Outside of a hospital it only works like 10% of the time

999 already tried to tl;dr it to me as my mother laid dead in a bathtub. Autopsy said it wouldn't have made a difference even knew it and did it perfectly before kalling. Kinda been kontent with being useless since. If your life depends on me; you're fucked.

Well I'm sorry to hear about all of those losses. Learning CPR yourself just increases the chances of survival. You can still learn it for someone else

For those who are certified (and it's not something you provide regularly because of your job), how confident do you actually feel that you can provide it efficiently?

Eh, the survival rate of people who needed CPR is around 17%, way worse the older the person is. Also long term effects of CPR are horrible and often people who survived wished they died.

TC, the sad thing is that even people who know how to perform CPR will most likely crack under the pressure in a real life scenario.

like you said, the minutes will go by so quickly and at that point its too late.

Hell yeah I did, and I'll do it again >_>

CPR isn't to revive someone, it's to keep them alive and circulating until advanced intervention arrives. Just pounding on someone chest with CPR alone will almost never revive a person >_> But it keeps the blood going through their organs and perfusing them until someone can give them something like epinephrine or such and jump their heart again. Basically you learning CPR keeps them flowing for 7 or 8 minutes instead of just leaving them dying for that same amount of time and increasing their chance of being permanently dead when proper help finally arrives

Also, I was in a situation where I thought my wife would die once. I can safely say that I wouldn't give a fuck if she pukes in my mouth during CPR, I'll just spit it out and go back to giving mouth-to-mouth.

Was CPR and first aid certified from about ages 10-23 because of Boy Scouts. My friend's mom was a nurse so she'd come and teach a free class on it every year for the troop.

Exactly. People don't realize first aid is literally aid you give to someone to keep them alive before the professionals arrive on the scene.

Been certified for years, and have been toying with the idea of becoming an instructor. I have saved one life already. You just never know.

Some cities and employers will certify you for free, btw.
