In which a remake is a graphical upgrade from the original and/or includes additional content?

Like, would you consider Super Mario Bros 2 (USA) to be a remake since the game it's based on had nothing to do with the Mario series? Or Super Mario All-Stars, having graphical updates to all the original games? What other games are there that would meet the requirements of a "remake"?

Absolutely! But I wouldn't consider it the first remake.

Adventure -> Colossal Cave Adventure is the first I know of. And that was in the 70's.

Don't know where it would be on the list, but the original King's Quest came out in 1984 and then there was an enhanced version in 1990.

Pretty much every single arcade game from the birth of arcades had to be remade from the ground up for consoles. Arcades would be graphically more powerful than consoles until basically the Xbox era, but back at the beginning there was no chance of any of them ever making it as is on to something like an atari.

They remade the Mario Bros games on SNES. Also Ninja Gaidens

I know they had to make the mazes different and turn the dots into squares because the Atari couldn't handle the power of Pac
I don't believe in belts. There should be no ranking system for toughness.

They had Mario bros arcade in 83 and the nes version super Mario bros in 85(?)
if that counts

Super Metroid is more or less a remake of the OG Metroid
That's not meant to be a remake in any sense. It's a direct sequel to Metroid II: Return of Samus.
Pikakaeru, use water gun!
So many arcade games got so many versions that you have to set a standard for what a remake is otherwise "graphical overhaul" could mean something like vector asteroids to raster asteroids.

Sometimes ports also looked dramatically different even if the content was the same. See for example Wizardry 1 PC vs Wizardry 1 NES.

Then there's weird shit like mega man Gameboy which is like a mashup of the first two main games.

I'm pretty sure there are Pong variants/updates.

Would Asteroids Deluxe be a remake of the original?
Every day I wake up and promise I will be nice to everyone, then I deal with people at work and remember why that will never happen.
Depends on how you split up remake, remaster, port, reboot etc.

It's a remake just like how OoT is a remake of ALTTP.

I mean they're basically the same game but heavily expanded on, even though they're technically sequels.
i think thats a pretty big stretch tbh. In both cases.

Dis, many people are citing different versions of games more or less simultaneously put out for arcade/different consoles/PC. But, imo, dose dont count as remakes.

Super Metroid takes a lot of cues from Metroid 1 but it is absolutely not a remake.

Idk, plenty of Metroid and Zelda fans agree

Think of Evil Dead 1 to ED2
I feel thats using the term remake way too loosely. Super metroid has you on Zebes again, but its clearly after the events of metroid 1. Idk how else super could be considered a remake of 1 other than both being on Zebes.

Alttp and oot also have similar structure to how the plot progresses on paper, but theyre still rather different as games. And this structure eventually just became the zelda formula. So i still wouldnt call oot a remake.

Like would you call the Yakuza games remakes of each other? other than the story theyre pretty much asset flips of each other until the later titles

Thats hard to say, many nes games were remakes of arcade or Atari games. So they could maybe be considered ports even thought theyre upgraded.

but in the very least snes and genesis was fill with remakes. Mega man, ninja gaiden, Mario bros and those collection games werent just ports, they were remakes

I bought that game second hand merely hoping that it would include the level that was missing from the NES port. I did a near spit-take when Donkey Kong got back up after the fourth level, knocked Mario out, and recaptured Pauline.
The answer is literally Pong, I'm almost completely certain of this.
