still listen to the app while its minimized.
It was never really free, because serving ads was part of the business model. It's that people skirted this with ad blockers. When something is "free," you are part of the product.
I probably wouldn't sign up for it today, but I got it bundled back when the service was google play music all access or whatever. So it's still $10 for both YouTube premium and YouTube music, which seems fair to meSame. Ive had it since Google play music was in beta so I pay, I think, $8.47 a month for it. I dont watch enough videos to justify paying full price otherwise though. If they eliminate my grandfathered pricing, Ill stream my music elsewhere probably. One nice thing about YouTube music is the ease of finding rare and unreleased songs compared to other services though so idk.
If they ever force me out of that deal then I'm cancelling and going the ad blocker route

It wasn't intended to be free. People are now upset that they can't circumvent this easily. Google can fuck off like every other (evil) major corporation, but no company is ever going to provide a service this large, like this, for free. You either pay for it via ads or you pay the premium to not see ads like most streaming services.Or use Invidious, YouTube ReVanced, FreeTube, NewPipe, etc.
100% worth it if you watch a lot of YouTube like myself. No ads and you can still listen to the app while its minimized. Plus it comes with YouTube Music Premium which allows you to cancel your Spotify/Apple subscription. The best part of that package is youtube music. You can download a custom YouTube APK for Android to get no ads + minimize privileges without paying.
This often doesn't work via Xbox or smarttvs or you have to jailbreak them. I'm not going to jump through hoops and spend hours trying to make that work when I could just pay $13 to not have to deal with that and it's solved for all of my devices. That's fine. Another advantage is the increased privacy though. Not a fan of Google's data collection policies.
If I was a poor college student, sure I would spend that time. My time is worth way more than $13/hour.
I dont get the hate YouTube gets for wanting to protect itself from ad blockers.
Because their ToS says they're not responsible if one of their ads fucks up your computer. If they don't wanna be responsible, we have no obligation to play ball.
(Rest of your post was "avocado toast" tier and not worth addressing)
Also all those years they collected data off users below the age of 13.
So if they removed that from their TOS you'd be fine with them cracking down on ad blockers?
As an aside, I find it interesting the amount of people who previously never once spoke about YouTube are now gushing over their premium service like they're being sponsored by Raid Shadow Legends.

Was there a reason to talk about it before this topic was made? You either subbed or didn't, it's not like you just blurt it out in a foot fetish topic or something.Yes. There have been topics about premium and people pushing premium in all of the ad block topics since youtube started doing this back towards the beginning of the year. It's like these users came out of nowhere and all reading from the same timeshare sales scripts.

I use premium because I like to download video for offline use.
youtube-dl is free thoughBut it's so convenient having it in the app with a click of a button
