Thought it went like this:

1 + 4 x1 = 5

2 + 5 x2 = 12

3 + 6 x3 = 21

8 + 11 x4 = 52

Poorly presented problem. You can't just make up random arithmetic operations without explaining the rules.

Thought it went like this:

1 + 4x1 = 5

2 + 5x2 = 12

3 + 6x3 = 21

8 + 11x4 = 52

You're close. There are two ways to get to the given answer. I will spoiler tag it in case any one doesn't want it revealed yet

The first is by simply adding the previous answer. 1 + 4 = 5; 5 + 2 + 5 = 12; 12 + 3 + 6 = 21; 21 + 8 + 11 = 40

The other is to multiple the second digit by the first, and then add. So it becomes:

1 + (1x4) = 5

2 + (2x5) = 12

3 + (3x6) = 21

8 + (8x11) = ?

Or, as was posted already, (a x b) + a

Would explain why I didn't understand this was some sort of "riddle" don't use Facebook outside of shopping for stuff.
