Fort Bragg shed its Confederate namesake on Friday to become Fort Liberty, in a ceremony some veterans said was a small but important step in making the US Army more welcoming to current and prospective Black service members.
The change was part of a broad Department of Defense initiative, motivated by the 2020 protests over the murder of George Floyd, a Black man, by a white police officer in Minneapolis that sparked a national reckoning on police brutality and enduring systemic racism in American society.
The military is in the process of renamingnumerous installations that had been named after confederate soldiers.Good. One of the most disgraceful things about serving as a Black man.
The Black Lives Matter demonstrations that erupted nationwide, coupled with ongoing efforts to remove Confederate monuments, turned the spotlight on the Army installations.
Kind of surprised how many installations are named after Confederates. Was Bragg a West Point graduate? It's a small wonder huge parts of this country, like the South, are still so fucked: being a racist traitor was allowed to continue, flourish even, all for the sake of reunification. Confederate symbology should be given the Nazi treatment, and shamed and buried at every chance (or rather, not buried if only to study and learn from their mistakes).

Never knew Bragg was a confederate general and considered their worst. WowIronically, one of the worst cases tbh.
Im sure there are a few folks crying about this now.Fuck those snowflakes
About fucking time.
He's literally the one who created the KKKNah, that was Nathan Bedford Forrest.
Good.
Fuck the Confederacy and fuck their traitorous "heritage."
Melt down their statues and erase their names from the public.

So is it welcoming when the military kills poor people for corporate profit?Yes, it welcomes that. Next.
Good.

They need to rename all the institutions that share names of the founding fathers next. You've made a bad argument.
They were also traitorous slave owners. Just look at all the abhorrent shit jefferson did with his slaves.

Ehhh key difference is the founding fathers didn't commit treason and take up arms against the very country with the bases...Yeah, pretty sure England didn't name military bases after them.
Good
Good. Traitors deserve nothing
This also it really makes people who claim "BLM didn't accomplish anything" really eat crow. The BLM movement has done so much good. With all the money it's leaders stole I guess changing a bases name makes up for it.
Bragg is literally one of the worst, most incompetent Confederate officers of the war
even if we ignore the whole naming it after a traitor thing, why did they name a fort after someone who was incompetent?Bragg was from North Carolina

Bragg is literally one of the worst, most incompetent Confederate officers of the war which is impressive when you consider he was competing for that role with guys like Hood and Ewell. He wasn't a good commander in the slightest, but he was hamstrung by the fact that his 1st Corp was commanded by a politically appointed incompetent (Leonidas Polk) who hated him and had a tendency to ignore his orders and undermine him at every turn. Polk was such a bad general that the shell that killed him has been described as "one of the worst shots fired for the Union cause during the entire course of the war"
Polk's incompetence and willful disobedience had consistently hamstrung Confederate operations west of the Appalachians, while his special relationship with the president made the bishop-general untouchable.
The movement exists beyond just the "leaders." and the spirit of it can't be claimed by a single set of individuals.I agree, same can't be said for all the money though.
