Still love it, but the magic fades when you know where everything is. Should I just move on to Below Zero? Anything else on PS4 I should look at to scratch that exploration, gathering, and building itch?

Please dont suggest the Forest, though. That game drives me batshit crazy.
It's one of the best games ever made imo. The perfect exploration game with the one caveat that base building should play a bigger role in the game.
'Cause you know that I have no fear, ain't gonna walk into the river and disappear. I'm gonna be a powerful man. Red blood running down the broken sand.
Its a shame that the sequel fails in comparison. But yeah the OG captured lightning in a bottle.

Forest is good though.

So, is Below Zero not worth it at all, or just go in with tempered expectations?

Save for the Forest, there's Green Hell, Ark Survival Evolved (runs like shit on PS4, but I still put 6 years in this), Conan Exiles, Portal Knights, Terraria, Stranded Deep,...

All doing what you're looking for with various art and combat styles.

I'll say this: I was consistently disappointed by the lack of QOL improvements as compared to the first game. If you do play it, consider downloading some mods to make the experience smoother, like expanded inventory and EasyCraft.

BZ also has generally weaker exploration than the first game, in part because of the design of the story.
We should strive to create a world of love and compassion. It may take a lot of time and effort, but it can be done.
Below zero was fun, make a big base.

Sea truck was meh imo, and I missed the other vehicles.

Overall it didnt feel as grand, but I had a good time and I liked building a cool multistory base with giant aquariums and an above water section.

A question about resource management: I tried to get into the game but after an hour or two I was seriously tired of the rate at which thirst increases and how annoying it is to mass produce bottled water even for short trips. Is there some way to speedrun a water filtration unit or something that gets me access to infinite free fresh water, or a suit upgrade that desalinates the seawater so I stay topped off while exploring? The food and oxygen levels decrease at what feels like reasonable rates but thirst is annoying enough to be a turnoff.

There is a stillsuit that makes water for you.

There is also a base upgrade that makes giant waters from the ocean as long as it is powered.

Look em up on the wiki.

I'm really upset that the next gen version of Subnautica they didn't fix the pop in that much
I am Mogar, God of Irony and The Devourer of Topics.
I enjoyed Below Zero a lot. Sure, it doesn't live up to the first game, but those were some big shoes to fill.

I'd say that the biggest change is that they really toned down the sense of dread. They said that they didn't intend for the first game to be so scary to players, so they made an effort to make Below Zero less scary. Some people hated that, but I'm a big scaredy cat, so I didn't mind lol.

Once I got the stasis rifle I wasnt afraid of shit, I used to go hunt leviathans for fun.

Really missed that in BZ tbh.
