How is it that back in the day, they didn't have delivery fees for pizza?

When I was younger, and even fairly recently, there actually was no delivery fee. You paid for the pizza, and then you tipped the delivery driver a tip. That was it.

Now, Dominos has a 5 dollars delivery fee. And then you're expected to tip on top of that. So a ten dollar pizza actually costs you twenty. Where does that delivery fee go? What's it for?

How did these businesses thrive when there was no delivery fee, but now they need one to stay in business?

I definitely don't remember there ever not being delivery fees.
Down with the Signess.
Don't forget the service fee on top of that. Which apparently doesn't cover for whatever the delivery fee is supposed to be.

Plus tax.

Not only no delivery fee, but back in the day, Dominos was free if they didnt get it to you in 30 minutes or less (area restrictions applied). That didnt last and it became a discount if they were late. Not sure when that disappeared.
In the 90s there was 100% no delivery fee.
We used to have empires ruled by emperors. There used to be kingdoms lead by kings. Now all we got are countries.
Yeah I don't think my local Pizza Hut did delivery fees until like mid 2000's
Ya, this has become one of the Covid things.
Almost no one around here charged a delivery fee until recently.

The delivery fees was a GrubHub/DoorDash thing. When pizza delivery businesses saw this, they realized they could get away with it too. Now it's almost $20 cheaper to do carryout for pizza. No fees plus deals for carryout. This is how Little Caesar's got away with $5 for their hot and ready takeout. Even if their pizza wasn't that good, it was cheap and edible.

Yep literally pulled the exact same thing that Sony and Nintendo did when they saw all the free money Microsoft was still making off of xbox live subscriptions.

The Domino's delivery drivers kept getting into car accidents trying to reach the houses within 30 minutes. Domino's got sued over it by people that were hit by Domino's drivers. So Domino's stopped doing it
The fine print says tip drivers because drivers dont keep the delivery fee for themselves, what greedy coporate nonsense is this?
It's because over the past 20-30 years corporations have developed a mindset that customers are just cows to milk for every drop of money they have

Tipping culture in America teaches you to blame the customer instead of the company that's fucking you.

Me neither, but I never ordered delivery. I did work as a driver though.
Your words are as empty as your soul
I can't speak to before the mid-2000s, as I wasn't ordering much delivery before then, but I remember most major chains had a delivery fee then.
