I'll probably start it up at some point today. Any tips? And also I don't have PS Plus, is it really necessary to the core experience?
I'm far from high end, I just know what suits me.
I like it like this

With friends>>solo>>with randos

I put a good amount of time in solo.

Oh, tips. Id say, don't worry about being overwhelmed. Use what feels comfortable and let your game evolve organically if you can. It will give the game more longevity if you're figuring out new techniques down the line instead of worrying about being perfect immediately.

My favorite weapon was the Switch Axe. I picked it first but branched out way later on. Still remained the most fun to use for me

Thanks, also I know there were a few add-ons and crossovers with other games that came out. Are they still available or was it a timed thing? Is there any significant DLC? I saw some gestures on sale on PSN, is that really it?

Timed events come back around, and once each season there's a "festival" when all quests are available. DLC is minimal and I wouldn't bother.

Pretty sure all the DLC is just cosmetics and what not. I haven't played in months but I know a lot of the stuff was timed. Pretty sure it loops back around at some point.

Take some time in the beginning to spar with the different weapons. Every weapon has it's own quirks and fun. Some have more depth than others (Charge Blade, Hunting Horn, and Insect Glaive to name a few) but yeah. I hope you enjoy it because I had tons of fun and put 200+ hours in easily, especially since I used all but 2-3 of the weapons.
Ok that's cool. Any word on when the next time they'll loop back around?

Capcom actually keeps a schedule online of upcoming events. I'm not sure when their next big seasonal one is, but when it pops it will appear there.

http://game.capcom.com/world/steam/us/schedule.html

Keep in mind that some quests are explicitly designed for high-level players, and even if they are available you probably won't be able to do them until the next time they come around.

In terms of general advice, I would recommend farming for the great jagras armor set early on. It will be the first complete set to give you enough defense to start doing the next round of content.

Also, this game really emphasizes Elemental weaknesses, so if one enemy is really kicking your butt, see what element they are and build the armor with the highest resistance to it. It makes a significant difference. This is also true for elemental weapons, although in general slow weapons benefit much more from raw damage and fast weapons benefit from element.

Just starting the first quest. I played around with a few weapons and settled on the twin blades so we'll see how that goes for now. The insect glaive seems interesting but I need to get more of a handle on it I think.

Twin blades are cool. The damage output might seem low but once you get a hang of the demon mode your DPS gets amazing. Also it has one of the most anime slide attacks ever IIRC
Insect Glaive is one of the weaker weapons in World but it's a lot of fun. It can be a bit crappy early on because your default Kinsect is slow as molasses, but as you upgrade the bug (focus on speed, it's the most important thing for a Kinsect by far) it gets to be more and more convenient. Just remember that as much fun as the aerial stuff can be, you do a lot more damage on the ground.

Just took down the Great Jagras. It was pretty fun tracking it down. When the red scale fills up with the twin blades what does that mean? More damage in Demon Mode?

It means you go into Archdemon mode, which...sucks, basically. It's an improvement over your default state, but it's inferior to demon mode in every way except for not draining stamina. Fill up the bar and you'll be in archdemon mode whenever you exit demon mode until the bar runs out, demon mode attacks will continue to fill it up. It basically just means that once you've filled the bar, you're a bit stronger than normal while you wait for your stamina to refill so you can go back into demon mode.

Is there more than just playing with others online? I mean, it makes farming way easier but imo it doesn't actually make the game nore fun to play. TC might feel different but I definitely thought it was more fun with a single friend or solo. I like feeling like Im actually making a difference. When I hopped online with randoms it felt cluttered and like I couldn't tell if I was even necessary. The enemy only targeting me and maybe one other person for the first 100 hours I played made it feel dull when Id bartely get targeted. Then again, that's all personal preference and others could like the complete opposite experience as me.

Also, Twin Blades is a good beginner weapon. I used them almost exclusively on MH4U for the 60 hours I put in. Played that one completely solo. It might just be me lol

Anjanath is the first real trial for solo play. See how that feels and go from there.

Ain't that the truth. It definitely gets frustrating when you solo. Twin Blades are a good solo weapon since you can dodge easily. Same with tje Switch Axe

Yeah I don't feel like playing with randos would be too fun for me, and I don't think any of my gaming friends would have the patience for this honestly. I'll give it a good solo run and see if I get destroyed lol. How long until Anjanath?

Not too long. Its low rank and spawns in the first area

I play all the MH games solo, it's still a great time without too much difficulty, but I can see how playing with 1 friend would be fun. But hell no to playing with randos.

Anjanath is pretty early (7 monsters in I think), it's your first "real" hunt. Think of the first few monsters as a tutorial for Anjanath.

Ah ok. I'm starting the first exposition now. And just to make sure I'm not missing anything, does slinger ammo restart from scratch every time you go out? If not, how do you select it?
I'm far from high end, I just know what suits me.
Slinger ammo starts from scratch on every quest/expedition, you have to find stuff laying around each time. Though there are a few things, like Flash Pods, that you can bring with you in your inventory.

ah damn I came in to say "dont start w dual blades like I did, they're cool af but are a pain in the ass if you're playing solo"

It is recommended that you generally play multiplayer, at least at the end where ideally people have learned how to play.

If you are sticking exclusively to single player, you might be locked out of the best end-game weapons, since it involves hunting a monster with generally 15 other people, and there's a time limit.
Gonna try using the Kinsect Glaive for a little bit. Using the Kinect that does poison damage.

I know it seems slow, but definitely try a few hunts with the Greatsword. You'll learn some solid habits using it that can be applied to basically any weapon.

I typically don't like slow weapons in games but I've heard this before so sure I'll try it out next.

$15 is a steal for this game. I sunk like 300+ hours into it when it first came out. Been a while since I played though.

I played up through the whole story maining Great Sword but switched to Gunlance for endgame. Learning all the other weapons at endgame was pretty fun too. I got decent with Bow and wasn't great with Heavy Bowgun but it looked so badass
Hey kiddies

A lot of the weapons in this game are slow and takes some getting used to but damn is it satisfying. I mained the GS after some shuffling around and hitting a fully charged last swing and getting the part broken or stun is one of the best feelings.

In between swings of the great sword you'll notice there's a tackle option. It has short range and low damage but it's utility is that it provides hyper armor (literally nothing will knock you out of the animation IIRC) as well as reduced damage so you pretty much have to time your swings and tackles until you can get to the third/final swing and deal most damage with it.

You might like the hammer. You would think it is a slow weapon, but it is actually fairly fast, and it's one of the few weapons that lets you move while charging your heavy attack.

I'm still not completely sure how the glaive works. So when you shoot it at a monster and then hit the spot it leaves behind it does lingering damage? And pressing R2 on it's own gets you buffs?

Every monster has three different sections, and depending on which section you hit the bug with you will get a different type of buff when it comes back.

You craft them like you do any other weapon. As soon as you can make weapons and armor, there should be a "kinsect" menu option.

Dodge dive dip duck and dodge.
The ending of the word is ALMSIVI
My advice would be to go on expeditions. Just explore the map and collect resources. Get used to the controls, how to use different slinger ammo and traps. But especially to learn the map. Start figuring out a decent loadout for hunts and start crafting those things.

Such a gorgeous game.

For what it's worth, I did dual blades and solo'd for as long as I was interested in playing, which was about 100 hours and into the early high rank. I'm a beginner at best, but I got plenty of fun out of it.

But it is definitely more fun with friends. For 15 bucks, maybe grab a second copy for someone.

There's 'Manage Kinsects' and under that is purchase and nurture, but I can only buy the starting two.

You nurture them to upgrade them like you would a weapon. If you look at any weapon in the store, you can only purchase 2: the base bone model, and the bast metal model. All other weapon upgrades spawn from those 2 base models. Kinsects are the same way: you can buy the 2 base types, but all the other types are from upgrading those base ones.
