He did refute it. Said he changed his sentence mid sentence.

Also why would he actually use that slur in an official NBA holiday greeting to China

Undeniably sounds like the slur, but I highly doubt that's what he intended to say

Id have no clue what he's saying without the subtitles. Kinda sounds like he wants to say Chinese, like his mouth was slower than his head and he didnt want to be redundant by saying Chinese fans in China.

Sounds like he went to say Chinese, then realized he was going to say "in China" at the end, stopped mid word, and casually went on anyway

The real question is why was this even aired, released, or whatever without being caught by editors or something putting it together? Why wouldn't they cut that out entirely or say hey it sounds like you said ____ let's get another take, or something?
Even knowing it's most likely an accident, because I mean who tf would use a racial slur intentionally in a direct holiday greeting? Nobody is that dumb. But still why would they leave it in knowing how it sounds?

Regardless though, I lol'd at the video in the op.

Assholes generally are also good at covering their own ass and caring about themselves... Even the biggest asshole in the world knows directly using a Chinese racial slur in the official NBA clip celebrating the Chinese New Year... Even the biggest asshole in the world would know that's a potential career ender...

It would be interesting to hear a linguist analyze it. Really does sound like he said it, but maybe they could pick up on some nuance that most wouldn't hear.
It does seem absurd someone would just say that in an interview like that. Then again, people say and do plenty of absurd things.
