Paid for playing? No. Their payment comes in the form of athletic scholarships and a 'degree' they didn't really earn.

What they should be allowed to do, however, is make money off of endorsements and the like. They should ABSOLUTELY have control over, and be compensated for, their likeness. NCAA video games, marketing campaigns, all of that.

Yeah I agree with that. Top competition videogamers can get big money endorsements so college athletes should be able to as well!
There's no practical way to decide who should be paid what.

The players should simply be free to profit off of their images if they are able to.

Their salary is their scholarship, but I have no problem with them getting paid for endorsements and jerseys with their name on it.

Who will pay them? The colleges that complain how broke they are and raise rates every year?

There's certainly a decent argument to be made for it but no, I think what they should do is channel that money into the other departments instead.

The other departments probably do benefit from the athletics department but if they stopped pushing so much back into the athletics departments, that "free tuition" thing might not be too unrealistic. At least not here in the football belt.
They are literally already paid, by boosters, agents, and other rich guys under the table.

The free market will pay them.

It's pretty crazy that they don't have control over how their image is used. Based on the rules now, the NCAA could, say, have sold "Tim Tebow's Swastika Armbands" and there really isn't much he could have done about it. (Incredibly insane hypothetical used merely to demonstrate the amount of power the NCAA has over your name while you play for them. Yes, it would result in the biggest PR nightmare of all time, but they could have done it.)

Interesting fact about the NCAA, on the list of banned substances, alongside steroids, nicotine, marijuana, caffeine?

Yeah, I'd support it.

Both the NFL and NCAA use college as their own minor league which lets them save lots of cash, and there's all sorts of merchandise/games/etc that a professional would be entitled to (in addition to their baseline, huge paycheck) that collegiate athletes are not, mostly into the pockets of the league/division people are opposed to the colleges or students themselves.

Making students pay tuition for profitable sports programs is bonkers.

I... don't? The topic asked if they should be payed for playing, and I answered it. They play football for three to four years, which the college makes money off of, and they come out the other end with a 'degree' they didn't have to earn and no student loans. That seems like a more than fair compromise.

I don't understand what I would be jealous of?

also they should be able to get paid. Very few of them(and virtually none outside of mens football/basketball) would make more than the cash value of their scholarship, but there is zero reason they shouldn't be able to take a "pay cut" to get it in cash instead of a scholarship they dont want to use.

You're clearly jealous. If that was such a fair compromise you wouldn't see boosters offering kids 150k+.

Yes, they should be paid. Their labor results in the billions of dollars in profit and it's just simply unfair that they're not getting paid.
If you're not looking for any honest discussion, agreement, meeting halfway or middle ground, don't bother arguing with me. Selfish narcissists need not apply.
EIther pay them for it or distribute more of the money being generated towards lowering student costs like tuition and parking since it's unfair as hell that all the capital just goes to the people at the top and the school despite it being so much of the athletes' har-work.

How is it any different from deciding what coaches should be paid what?

A little bit more logistical work is going to have to be put into deciding the system of paying hundreds of recruits fairly without annihilating any sense of parity between schools than letting teams throw however much money they want at a coaching staff.

If you're going to allow schools to decide how much money they can pay each player, there has to be a salary cap otherwise the skew towards a few top schools will get even worse than now. Or do we just pay starting QBs a specific wage? Who decides which position gets what? What about two position players? What about bench players that never even rotate into games? If there is a salary cap does that mean bottom of the roster walk ons who would have at least been on the team before now get cut?
Dielman on Rivers: "I've tried to get him to say s--- or f--- and all he'll ever do is say, 'Golly gee, I can't do that."
It's also really flawed to say they're paid for by giving what you believe is a trash degree since they obviously won't be able to use it and certainly won't have the know how to succeed in the field.

So they're being used for their athleticism and then thrown out once they're used where they have gained nothing of value to use post college career if they don't make pro.

I mean, I know many people who fucked around in college and learned minimally from their degree and ended with a career due to the degree. In fact, that describes the large majority of college students.

No SOME are paid in that manner, but most are not.

The players that matter are. Its a business being disguised as school.

Not all college athletes get a scholarship and not all that have scholarships get full rides. And that's presumptuous to think that all college athletes do not earn their degree.

Fair point. To be honest, I'm mainly talking about top end Basketball and Football schools. You're right, I didn't consider things like D3 schools, or... swim teams, I guess. Same thing with the degrees, mainly talking about top tier schools. Like, I hope there isn't anyone who thinks that, say, twenty year old Tom Brady was getting home from two a days and cracking the books.

That raises a different problem then. What do you pay the different divisions? Would it be performance based? Would you make more at, say, The U than you would at Shitty D1 State University? Do you only pay D1 players, and if not then how do you decided how much everyone gets?

I... don't have those answers. Hmm.

Not every student-athlete is on a scholarship, so of course they should make money. They should also be allowed to have jobs.

It's not a really a free education if the no. 1 priority is the sport to all parties. You really think a coach sees their player's degree as a priority.
Asherlee10 posted...
That has some fatal flaws in that logic. First of all, that manner in getting "paid" is illegal. Second, most of these are team sports. Requires a team to win the game, even with average players. Star players can't win by themselves. Legal compensation with some sort of minimum would be closest to fair.

Yeah its "Illegal"

I don't see why anyone should have a problem with just making that legal. Do you cry unfair when Obama or Milo is offered millions to say words? Its their money, let them use it how they want.
