Paid for playing? No. Their payment comes in the form of athletic scholarships.
What they should be allowed to do, however, is make money off of endorsements and the like. They should ABSOLUTELY have control over, and be compensated for, their likeness. NCAA video games, marketing campaigns, all of that.
Paid for playing? No. Their payment comes in the form of athletic scholarships and a 'degree' they didn't really earn.

Why do you care? Reeks of jealousy.

Yeah I agree with that. Top competition videogamers can get big money endorsements so college athletes should be able to as well!
There's no practical way to decide who should be paid what.

I... don't? The topic asked if they should be payed for playing, and I answered it. They play football for three to four years, which the college makes money off of, and they come out the other end with a 'degree' they didn't have to earn and no student loans. That seems like a more than fair compromise.
I don't understand what I would be jealous of?
You're clearly jealous.

Okay, explain to me how I'm jealous.
I'll wait.

How is it any different from deciding what coaches should be paid what?
It's also really flawed to say they're paid for by giving what you believe is a trash degree since they obviously won't be able to use it and certainly won't have the know how to succeed in the field.
No SOME are paid in that manner, but most are not.
If you're going to allow schools to decide how much money they can pay each player, there has to be a salary cap otherwise the skew towards a few top schools will get even worse than now. Or do we just pay starting QBs a specific wage? Who decides which position gets what? What about two position players? What about bench players that never even rotate into games? If there is a salary cap does that mean bottom of the roster walk ons who would have at least been on the team before now get cut?
You wouldn't accept any employer paying you in store credit.
Not all college athletes get a scholarship and not all that have scholarships get full rides. And that's presumptuous to think that all college athletes do not earn their degree.

So basically, its not easy to divvy things up so we can't do it?
That has some fatal flaws in that logic. First of all, that manner in getting "paid" is illegal. Second, most of these are team sports. Requires a team to win the game, even with average players. Star players can't win by themselves. Legal compensation with some sort of minimum would be closest to fair.
So basically nobody has any ideas on how to actually do it other than "sure pay them sounds great"

Thats where it should start.
