Who pathed the way for mass European colonization of the Americas?

Who was responsible for discovering the Americas and relaying the discoveries back to Europe, prompting continuous colonization ever since?

Some posts I've seen recently basically compare Christopher Columbus' accomplishments to one hopping into their Prius or hipster junker and discovering some new trendy bar that offers espresso shots served in syringes and then telling all of their friends what a discovery was made.

but that's more or less what happened, it's not like civilization didn't exist in the Americas before Europeans showed up

No, not really. Christopher Columbus worked his butt off in horrendous, dangerous conditions and for many, many years.. and without the technology we are privileged with today.

Do you believe you would exist as a person if it weren't for colonization of the Americas?

Hardly. It's easy to grow food when you had generations of natives growing crops in the area already. Hell, they didn't even need to grow it themselves, they just got slaves to do it.

Vote for Christopher Columbus and let me know you did so, or vote for other and tell me who else is responsible.

Then I will answer your question.

Obviously not since at least part of my ancestry can be traced to the Tainos, but then again, why does this magically make all the pillaging and raping ok? Nazi scientists are part of the reason NASA even exists, but that doesn't make their war crimes less abhorrent.

He's officially lost it lol.

No one hates Columbus simply because he landed on San Salvador. It was everything he was personally involved in after that makes him a terrible person to commemorate.
I see two votes for "Other" with no explanation of how this person/group of people led to mass European colonization of the Americas.

Also, the thing is that this isn't even looking at 1492 and later through a modern day glass; there were people back then who thought Columbus was ruthless, like Bartolomeo De Las Casas.

The question isn't about "ruthlessness" or any other accusation. The question is very, very simple.

I've been through a few topics on CE that claim Columbus isn't responsible for **** and didn't accomplish ****.

So I want to hear some actual facts in this topic that back those sentiments up, if one believes Columbus didn't do anything productive----who did---who is responsible--- how--- and why---- Very simple.

The answer is Spain, homie G. And it is Spain that colonized Southern America, which means that the idea of "Mexican" is the blending of Spanish colonizers who interbred with Native Americans.

do you believe every demographic in America should feel the same about Christopher Columbus? when you make topics like this, do you consider those other people or is that overshadowed by manifest destiny?

What does feelings have to do with a very simple question? You can say Christopher Columbus was "a bad person" but clearly no one can say he didn't play a major role in discovering the Americas and contributing to mass European colonization.

It's pretty sad what's going on ITT and it's sad people are blatantly ignoring facts with no alternative explanation. Everyone viewing this topic knows it, too.

It took such a simple question to reveal the truth leftists have been denying in other topics the past several hours.

sure the vikings came before colombus,
but they didnt send in masses of people.

i dont know if you guys know but there is some European input in Native American dna (from thousands years ago).

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2013/11/131120-science-native-american-people-migration-siberia-genetics/

Nearly one-third of Native American genes come from west Eurasian people linked to the Middle East and Europe, rather than entirely from East Asians as previously thought, according to a newly sequenced genome.

No, he never would've been born in the country (or countries) his ancestors came from. The chain of events, spanning hundreds of years, would have been so radically different that anyone who is currently alive in the United States would not likely be alive today had Europeans not successfully colonized North America and displaced the native popultion. We would have a radicallu diffrent world with a uniquely seperate group individual descendents.

Unless there's some sci-fi timeline shenanigans where we could expect ourselves to exist more or less the same, except now we have a cockney accent or something.

Yeah, but I don't think they did a whole lot to "pave the way" for mass European colonization in the same way we would say for men like Colombus or the pilgrims or whatever.
He only proved to the rest that it's possible to sail across the ocean to reach land in a reasonable amount of time.

So the real credit belongs to whoever actually realized that Columbus actually reached a new continent (Columbus himself did not realize that fact and actually believed he made it close to India or Indonesia all the way to the grave).

I applaud you for your honesty in acknowledging the truth compared to others in this topic (besides the poll results, of course).

As far as whether or not he should be praised, I think that calls for another time in another topic, given the fact we have people currently struggling with objective truth.

We can't have a discussion about praise or condemnation if people won't even acknowledge facts of the matter.
