You sign a contract for that.

But then there is the part of me that doesn't want to believe that it would be possible for a complete clown like him to get into the position that he is in without being a smart guy.
i think he is a guy who has the correct skillset and is good at the necessary things required to enable you to be successful at business. the longer i work in the professional world, the more i realize that being intelligent, well-read, etc are not necessary traits to be successful in business.

He was born into wealth, so bullshit. He didn't "become" anything.
In DnD terms, he has a high charisma stat and what would appear to be either a respectable intelligence or wisdom score, but he sure has taken a hit in the other one. So great charisma and most likely wisdom, since he's clearly a rogue archetype given his shyster qualities.
Also may explain why his will saves and forced checks are so good.

You make it sound like getting rich is like rolling dice. You obtain and maintain that much money by continuously making good moves over and over again for years.
He's more intelligent than his haters would have you believe. It's just the same thing as George Bush.
