Would you become a vampire?

Poll of the Day

Depends on which version of the vampire myth we're assuming is true.

As a standard baseline version? Sure. I don't really enjoy the sun now, I don't really do all that much that would trigger their classical weaknesses so I wouldn't have to give up all that much, I'm not religious, and I'd have zero qualms about feeding on humans as long as it was relatively easy (ie, I can basically mind-whammy my victims into not fighting back).

In plenty of settings they can feed without killing, so if that's the case it's easy. Especially if you've got mind control powers. It's harder logistically if every feeding means a kill, because then you're stuck having to constantly hide bodies, and choose your victims carefully to avoid leaving a trail they can follow back to you.

The main drawback of vampirism today is "the grid". As in, how hard it is to get off it. It'd be extremely hard to fake your own death every few decades and to explain why you never seem to age. Which you'd absolutely have to do, to avoid getting captured and experimented on by people who want to try and figure out how your immortality works. Or just outright killed because you're seen as a monster. Beyond that, you'd have to be extremely careful to avoid things like getting buried alive or otherwise trapped in places you can't escape from, because that's where immortality becomes a true curse.

Fortunately you bypass a lot of the other "oh my god immortality sucks" problems because you're presumably not indestructible, so suicide always remains an escape option. Plus that way you get to go out on your own terms, not withering away all decrepit and mentally impaired as age rots you away. Even loneliness isn't 100% an issue, because as a vampire you can (presumably) always make more of your own kind, so you can potentially preserve friends and loved ones who you'd otherwise miss dearly (assuming the simple fact of immortality doesn't sort of inherently jade you to the idea of relationships as a whole and leave you disinterested in those sorts of things).

The only other drawback I'd really be afraid of is how effectively it heals damage that's already been done. If I get Embraced tomorrow and suddenly I feel like I did when I was in my 20s and my eyesight is magically 20/20, that'd be awesome. But if I'm going to be spending all of eternity rolling out of my coffin every morning with aching joints, having to squint to read things, and with a vampire dad-bod beer gut, maybe that's not as enticing.
