Im partial to the 80s and 90s myself. Not up to date on modern music so hard to comment on it.
Every decade has great music produced
Needed: New Pokemon Puzzle League, Shining Force and Left 4 Dead....
I like 'em all. There's crap music and amazing music in every decade. I guess I was a bit more of a "60s" and "90s" era kid outside of everything else.

This topic is basically just "Which decade were you a teenager in?", or "Which decade did you start listening to popular music in?"

Most people latch onto their early music experience as the best, because nostalgia is a hell of a drug. And because the first types of music you listen to and enjoy tends to shape your tastes, and thus influences your opinions of all future music.

If that were true, the winning choices here would be the 90s and 00s

There has actually been statistical analysis done about it; from a broad perspective, people's tastes tend to plateau at 17~, and by the time you're in your mid 30's, you like current music as much as music when you were born. It drops off at both ends, but much more sharply as you age vs music from before your time. There also seems to be a slight bump up around 20-30 years before your time, which is probably a parental influence thing.

80's was best
Nothing will peak the 80s. The 70s and 60s had some pretty great music too.
As a kid I rode the wave of 90's music (rock, rap, whatever) but the 60's is a lot of the good bands I got into while i was working when i first graduated in 2004. The 60's is a great decade.

It makes sense since I grew up in the 90s (Born in the mid 80s), listening to my Dad's old records, classic rock of the time was 60s & 70s, oldies 50s to 70s, and 80s nostalgia seemed to begin pretty quickly (VH1 had an 80s block by the mid 90s).

Hell I was watchin eps of Green Acres the other week since that was a Nick At Nite staple, so nostalgic for nostalgia lmao.

Nah, I listened to the 50s oldies station, far more than 70s music when I was a teenager.

Couldn't stand most disco music, hated the Grease and SNF fever soundtracks, and had no passion for the remnants of the counter culture bands.
Glad to see the right choice is winning.

Although I will pretty much listen to anything casually as far back as the 1920's and up until the modern day.

For creating music? Highly debatable, but doesn't really matter. For listening to music? Pretty unarguably the current one, since we've got access to virtually all of the best stuff to come out of previous decades.

Maybe leaning more towards 90s since 80s songs are mostly chorus
I like all decades 80s to now. If I had to pick a favorite I'd say 90s.

Is it me, or are the 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s kind of lacking distinguishing characteristics compared to the previous decades? It feels "modern" and that's it. Maybe 2000s stand out.

I was a teenager in the 2010s but I definitely prefer bands from before then. 2010 might even be the decade I liked the least for music.

I my favorite bands pivoted to electronic sounds to try to stay relevant in 2010, meanwhile Tool and Rammenstien are over here making their best songs yet in the 2020s.

I'm pretty sure everyone else is talking specifically about the music they came out in said decade not said decade + everything before. Also you can't see bands that broke up.

This is what I'm saying. But I have recently gained a very big appreciation of music from the 70's. Especially from Japan.

Which leads to another thought, music from which countries? There's a whole world of music out there and it's all great. Admittedly though, it's much easier to access this music today which I love.

I may be an outlier, but I didn't even listen to music until I was out of high school (2006), and didn't start actively pursuing new music until between 2010 and 2012. I generally disliked most popular music when I was growing up in the 90's and early 00's. Even when I did start listening to music for music's sake, it was mostly adjacent to what I was getting from video games, which would have been Sleeping Dogs/GTA5. So a lot of stuff like Flying Lotus, which I still like.

But maybe around 2016 is when I really went down the rabbit hole and consumed everything I possibly could, and only within the past few years did I really start expanding outside of the English language. I am a firm believer now that there is always something of value from any and all genres, a thought I didn't used to have.

You aren't crazy. There is definitely something to be said of the lack of creativity and unique style as music creation has become more accessible and labels have pushed for more homogeny.

There is also the theory of the effect music streaming has had on the way people consume music. Where they aren't as likely to feel a personal connection and form their identity around the music they listen to anymore as it's more disposable and easier to consume. No one is buying physical media, they're just swiping through the few songs they like.

I personally don't subscribe to or identify with this theory, but it is interesting to think about. Culture as a whole definitely is becoming more and more disposable in the modern era.

Are there zoomers or gen alpha that think 2000's had the best music?

That is a terrifying thought.

ADDENDUM: I am sure it is theoretically possible for good music to come out during that time, but all I can think about is Will I Am's dogshit music and Gwen Stefani appropriating Japan in the worst ways possible.

I think a lot of this is survivor bias. The crap sank out of public consciousness while the better music is still popular. The further back the music was released the more prominent the effect is.

This is an excellent point but I don't think 2000's had the music to redeem the decade. 2010's was legitimately better.

I think I have to agree. It's as if the 2000's were trying to be the 2010's but were in those awkward teenage years of finding their way.

It's easier now to find music you like than it ever has been. Streaming algorithms are excellent at curating new artists who are adjacent to what you're already listening to. Just go through and pick out a few songs you think sound good, go through the artists discography to seed the algorithm even further, then spread out to everything else that's relevant.

I am constantly finding new music to appreciate. I don't know, maybe it helps to have an open mind, too.

Well yeah, I mean I don't go to the grocery store and hear a new song I like. It's easy enough to research new stuff I like, but like I can hear something like She Blinded Me With Science in a Walmart and think that sounds rad. Basically I will hear stuff through osmosis I like, but none of it is new. New stuff I like I tend to find either because an old band puts out a new record, it plays in a concert venue before the bands play, they open for a band I like, or sifting through recommendations via streaming or youtube music videos.

You are assuming I'm comparing the best stuff of the past to the worst stuff of now and not the best stuff of now. If I compare the top 10 bands of the 70s and the top 10 bands from the now and feel the top 10 bands from the 70s are better, is that survivor bias?

Yeah, not really. If you look at GF demographics, there aren't a lot of people here who were born in the 60s/70s, which is what you would need if your theory matched with the results. Most of the people on this site were still in diapers in the 80s, if they were even alive at all.

Anyways, my opinions on music by decade are as follows:
1920s through 1940s - I'm a sucker for swing/big-band stuff, so I actually really like this era.
1950s through 1960s - Hot garbage. There's very little that came out in this era that I actually like, and what is there is drowned out by dross (and considering that it's usually "the good stuff" that still gets played decades later, I shudder to think what the scene actually looked like at the time).
1970s - Kind of OK, I guess? Some of it felt like an extension of the 60s. Honestly, aside from some of the hard rock that laid the foundation for the 80s metal wave, I don't really like much from here either.
1980s - Now we're talking. Music in this era was fucking spectacular. Not universally, of course, but the overall sound of the decade is still my absolute favourite. Both the synth-pop and hair metal stuff that was going on in this decade were great, and this was rock's best decade to date.
1990s - This was kind of like the 80s more refined but somewhat less cool younger brother. I love 90s music, but it did feel like a step back from the 80s.
2000s - Yeah, I really didn't like where music went in the 2000s. I don't think I can name more than a few songs from this era that I liked that were actually popular.
2010s and 2020s - By this point, popular culture diffused so much that I couldn't even tell you what was or is popular anymore. On the upside, small, niche music creators had more tools than ever to make and distribute their work, so there's been an absolute explosion of really fun stuff. I haven't heard anything new on the radio in years that I actually like, but there's been tonnes of fun stuff I've found through Youtube. Dunno how to grade that, really...
