I don't get the point of this giant robot

OK, the guy wears the first robot like a suit of armor, but then that robot fits inside another robot, which fits inside a third robot, like a set of matryoshka dolls. I've never seen this show, but is there a reason for this? Why would someone design giant robots like this?

If the outermost robot gets damaged or incapacitated somehow, the inner robot could break out, and continue to function.
