I booted it up not too long ago after being Dread, just to see how it compared. I ended up accidentally playing through the whole game again. Aside from the awkward controls, it really is great. Even though it's a 16-bit game, the atmosphere is great, the feeling of total isolation is palpable. It almost has a horror vibe at times. Definitely one of Nintendo's best.

Yes,

however, in my old age I am finding metroid 2 to be more replayable

Still my favorite game, on my favorite console. Probably have beaten it almost 20 times at this point, about half of them with 100% completion.

It's a little dated in some ways, but otherwise, you aren't going to get too much disagreement on that one. It remains one of the best examples of the Metroidvania genre, even after 30 years of building on the foundation it laid.

Same, although I used to speed run it so I've beaten that game dozens of times but usually with much less than 100%
