On one hand, being faithful to the original's references would appeal more to the people buying this out of nostalgia, but on the other, a lot of those references are just going to go over the heads of modern audiences. Most of the games' references were targeted at adults and older teenagers 25-30 years ago who were familiar with the pop culture material in question, and a good chunk of that demographic now is younger than the
games
, let alone the pop culture material being referenced. Given how heavily the games lean on those references, they may end up suffering for having them fall flat and not doing well as a result.
Though, saying that, modernizing the references would be a ton of work, so I'm inclined to guess that they'll just remake them as-is.
