I think nationalism is fantastic because it keeps people focused on co-operation and competition at the same time. More important issues like trade remain at the forefront of the discussion, rather than "correct pronoun" bullshit, etc., because homogeny makes everyone soft and complacent.

I read that patriotism has traditionally been pretty low over in the U.K. Seems pretty bizarre to me. I wonder how many other countries are like that.

Eh, it was a stretch, but I don't think it was nonsensical. Simply not caring about trans rights is sometimes considered transphobic by the more extreme activists.
