Would you be banned from this bar based on their "clothing ban"?

A New Tavern opened up in Des Moines, Iowa is accused of RACISM after complaints emerged that it's specifically targeting Black MEN!!

Tispy Crow Tavern said it would refuse service to anyone wearing clothing such as: Bagging Jeans, plain t-shirts, construction boots...however the other part then says anyone wearing do-rags or scarf, cloth worn around their head and tied in the back, sideway caps and jeans hanging below the waist are also banned!!

Management later removed the sign after the embarrassing mishap went viral when it had fierce backlash

It remains to be known if this policy had been abandoned or just in secret

It raised the debate in town on whether dress codes in bars are instituted for safety purposes or a thinly veiled scheme designed to discriminate minorities.

The clothing ban in particular is aimed at young african american men who wear the apparel they are banning.

28 y/o Arnold Woods said "Not just downtown bars, but all bars want it both ways". Arnold is a black male graduate says "They don't want minorities there because if too many black men are in a bar it brings trouble. It's obvious what they're trying to do"

Steve McFadden, the owner of the bar said discrimination was not a factor in enforcing the dress code but claimed that nearby establishments had problems with "rowdy customers" and "recent shootings" with people who dress this way and said they just want "good customers". He said he took action after a group of black AND white customers harassed others..

Tony Tyler took the picture before it was removed said "Who doesn't wear a plain t-shirt??. It looks like a great place and i heard it's a place to be right now but i will not go to a place that targets racial groups"

Would you be banned if you went to this bar? let's see what people will vote

Plain t-shirts are bad? You'd think t-shirts with tacky images would be worse, but what do I know?

Banning clothing is nothing new. Once again the folk screaming racism are the ones actually being racist.

Why does this target black people?

It seems to target hip hop culture. If a hip op culture banned clothing typically associated w lame bands like phish or Radiohead and prohibited cutters from getting in would it be taken as being a ban on white people?

No it would not. I'm sure many non white people dress lame and cut themselves to Radiohead.

Seriously- anyone making the claim that that attire is a black ban is racist against black people themselves.

Ironic, since the bar is called the Tipsy Crow which seems like racist code for a place catering to blacks. Then again, maybe they shortened it from the Tipsy Jim Crow >_> At any rate, given the other requirements it doesn't seem racist . If it was ONLY those cliches, maybe they'd have a stronger case.

And I could be banned based on those criteria, or I could change.

I don't get this logic of "people who mistakenly call out racism are the real racists." I see it often, and I don't get it.

Just toss on a collared shirt and we're good to go.

They are insinuating that only black folk wear these type of clothing by suggesting it's racist to ban these type of clothing from a bar. The fact of the matter is they just banned the type of clothing not blacks themselves so race is irrelevant.

Because you're stereotyping and generalizing an entire race through a set of ridiculous cliches while simultaneously claiming them to be unique to said race....?

I didn't understand that either.

Besides T-shirts, I usually don't wear any of the other clothing mentioned. I don't think I even own them. I also don't go to bars, so this shouldn't be a problem for me.

I don't know if the options you used will get the answer you were looking for-you might have wanted to go with something more like:
Yes and I'm white
Yes and I'm black
Yes and I'm hispanic/asian/other
No and I'm white
No and I'm black
No and I'm hispanic/asian/other
Mod me? You don't even know me!

Exactly. Assuming that they only wear those types of clothing is in itself negative stereotyping.

Besides, it's just a dress code. A lot of hotels and restaurants in the country I reside in have dress codes.....

I wear work boots and plain shirts just about everywhere. The question is, would anyone notice since I'm white?
