Are you distracted by Afro Hairstyles?

17 y/o Jenesis Johnson from Florida has blasted her private high school principal after he told her to fix her Natural Afro because it was a "DISTRACTION" to fellow students!!

Lynn Burgess, the assistant principal at North Florida Christian said her full, natural hair was "not neat" and "needs to be put in style", by which he meant STRAIGHTENED like a white girls!!

She said "It is fixed" of his demands and insisted her hair is natural and meets that criterial for natural hair styles. But she was told if it isn't fixed, she risks her ENROLLMENT at the private high school and could be booted because of it!!

The demands comes as a surprise to her as she's been wearing it on and off since 7th grade and daily for the past 7 months. She admitted that her hair is large but she's alwas sitting at the back of the classroom as to not obstruct anyone's view.

She says the uproar happened a week ago when a teacher asked her: How long are you rocking that hairstyle?" which then prompted other kids to ask her about the styling and upkeep of the afro..it was only 2 days later that the principal asked her to straighten it out and said "No faddish or extreme hairstyles, and hair should be neat and clean at all times, insinuating that her hair was DIRTY!!..but the school handbook makes no mention of afro hairstyles.

Her mother, Lisa said "You might say that it didn't fit the handbook. But i saw and what she heard is a woman telling her that she's not pretty, hair hair does fit society"

Massachusetts attorney general sent a letter to schools demanding they ceease "subjecting students of colour, especially black students, to differential treatmeant" after students at several schools wore hair extensions and braids were facing suspension.

But North Florida Christian is a private institution and does not have to comply with anti-discrimination laws, a fact that leaves her academic future there in question.

She said "It hurts me. It's hurting me. For my people behind me, the younger ones, they're going to have hair like me. Why can't they wear their natural hair?"

If Jenesis doesn't straighten her hair next fall, they will refund her money and kick her out...

Are you "offended" by Afro hairstyles?.

Is straightening out an afro, like, making it more equidistant on all sides, or removing it entirely?

'cuz nothing worse than a bed-head afro

If you comb your hair, is it no longer natural?

EDIT: Absolutely this.

It's just like saying that since I have long straight hair that reaches to my waist that I can leave it in the open.

No. Hair needs to be kept; prim and neat.

I don't think it needs to be straightened. But it just needs to be at least kept properly; however she wants to do it. But it cannot be left as it is.

Yeah most Afros I see are nice and look neat and look like they have direction; this girl doesnt even look like she even brushes her hair in the morning, theres a lot of stray hair bunches in the afro.
Girl probably could have gone out to the barber got a small trim and been fine. I dont think it had to escalate to this.

No one explicitly said "no afros", they just want it styled or neat and a barber always does a good job at making your hair look neat.
