3 months is standard in some industries or depending on your job role. And in those job roles if you're get a new job they expect a 3 month notice period can even be longer, I know someone who had a 9 month notice period. It's normally 1 month for most jobs though, gives the place time to find a replacement for you. I've never had it be awkward working when everyone knew I was leaving. You normally all go out for drinks and get leaving presents on your last day too.

Sometimes if you hand in your notice you get put on gardening leave for your notice period where you get paid your full wage but don't do any work, this is normally when you're working with sensitive information or moving to a competitor.

If you're fired you get let go then and there. Only if you're being made redundant or you want to leave you get the notice period.
