Like, is this dude legit? I snipped it off my own facebook. The dude's a real meteorologist

No. Irma is a good deal larger than Andrew, but it's not that big.

The hurricane looks like it's as big as the state of florida. "Not that big?"

For real?

For starters, I just saw a satellite photo of Irma, and it's nowhere near that big - it stretches a little south of Cuba to a little beyond the southern tip of Florida in terms of cloud diameter. And you can't gauge the field of effect of a hurricane simply by its clouds. Currently the tropical storm-force wind diameter is 300 miles, and the hurricane-force wind diameter is 110 miles or so. Florida is over 400 miles long from northern border to southern tip, for reference. If you shifted Irma in this pic, it would stretch from the southern tip of Florida to the middle of fucking Ohio.

Whoever made that image knew exactly what they were doing in terms of sensationalism - Irma's a monster, but it's not disaster-flick ginormous. I'm highly doubtful that even the relative size between Andrew and Irma is accurate.
