The newer games just catching pokemon and nothing more gives you a shit ton of exp, so you're stuck with the choice of: catch pokemon(the entire reason the game exists) and be overleveled or blaze through the game to make it "more challenging"
pretty sure i solo'd blue with a Blastoise while the XP share all had everyone else at the same level
