You only really need 7 hardwood/cedar trees if you just want wasps and furniture (unless there's an event running that spawns stuff on them like leaf eggs)
It'll prioritise certain things if you only have a few trees:
Event Items > 5 Wasps > 2 Furniture > 15 bags of 100 Bells
For spacing, I had my 7 trees in this formation for weeks and only had trouble if a villager was in the way...
