Was Thomas really an asshole?
He said killing people just because they're rich wont change anything, he didn't know that the three guys were getting some karmic retribution for harassing and assaulting someone.
He confronts Joker after Joker is staring at him use a urinal, then is actually pretty calm about the situation until he realizes that Joker is unhinged and dangerous (eg putting his hands in Bruce's mouth and strangling Alfred and yelling at Thomas in the bathroom)
I think he acted pretty fairly to a dude assaulting his kid and butler/friend
