To be 100% honest, as far as characters in the show go, Billy West's are the most important overall, since the story centers around Fry. However Bender is a major reason the show has enjoyed as much popularity as it has.
Then another there point to consider is that as far as prestige goes, John DiMaggio is the more prolific VA among everyone there with 424 acting credits on IMDB. So it makes sense he would want higher pay than what might have been offered, but from what I read in other places he was trying to withhold from signing a contract to get higher pay for everyone, not just himself.
Overall I'm sad he won't be returning, but his reasoning for holding out for more money is sound.
