Does she ever make a big public scene outside of her apartment? Yelling and threatening people, etc? This story reminds me of one of my neighbors, who is bipolar and schizophrenic and had a massive breakdown a few years ago. Also a sweet old lady, until she suddenly wasn't. She had to be forcefully institutionalized, and after 2-3 weeks in the hospital, they released her and she came around apologizing to everyone in the building, saying that it was a good thing she got reported, because she had stopped taking her meds and would've kept spiraling otherwise. But the tricky thing is that someone had to report her while she was outside and causing havoc (screaming obscenities, damaging property, etc). If she had been in her apartment, she could've just refused to open the door and nobody would've been able to legally do anything. I'm talking about getting medical attention here. Not calling the cops. You should check in your area and see what emergency services exist for stuff like this, and what circumstances are required for intervention.
