As a college writing instructor, I can say that I encourage my students to use Wikipedia to acquire general knowledge about a topic. It is a great place to begin research, and the citations list is convenient for finding sources on your topic.
Age and digital literacy seems to be a factor in whether teachers understand that Wikipedia is so much better than Google. At least Wikipedia is edited and protected. I'd rather acquire knowledge from a site that tries to verify information and back it up than just rely on whatever shitshow Google page one yields.
