Perhaps you could try the cellphone app SLOWLY. It is for writing letters to people around the globe. I managed to make very interesting pen pals I could concider my friends as I talk about my life and they tell me about theirs.

Im like you, I have problems to get around people sometimes. At first, it was because I was afraid of being rejected. I also had some trust issues. Nowadays, I find that trying to make friends and hanging out with them is just time and energy consuming. Perhaps I'm growing old. Lol
