I don't know if unions in other industries are different, but I've found that in manufacturing, specifically in machine shops, unions often foster laziness in employees and a workplace where things take longer than they need to. I've heard stories of CNC machinists in union shops that are not allowed to edit their programs since that's the programmers' job. So things that should be easy 5 second fixes become a whole rigmarole involving people from various departments.

I won't speak on the laziness aspect of this, but as for the second half of your post this seems like something that can be addressed by the union. If enough people come together to hash it out, they can likely get past those nonsense rules, but that does require union members to participate.

I'm part of a union because I work for a school and they tend to be unionized places of work. Can't say enough good about my workplace, though I am only a few months in.
