Just beat the game myself and it's my 2nd SMT game. For the most part, the game is pretty manageable but you may randomly wipe if enemies target the right party members or you get hit with a chain of random crits. Otherwise, only the first story boss I found somewhat difficult because you have no real resources to make your party yet but after that it's not too bad at all.
