3. Meshell Ndegeocello - Peace Beyond Passion
Neo-Soul, Contemporary R&B, Psychedelic Soul, Jazz-Funk, Spoken Word
1996

I'm genuinely really happy to see you enjoyed the album and rather surprised to see it in top 3! When first nominating it I was admittedly skeptical of doing so because the lyricism in this is a really big part of why I love this album so much, and I feel like some people might be put off by the topics adressed especially when not focusing on the lyrics, but I'm really glad I ended up doing submitting it in the end.

Also, something in regards to what you said about the instrumentation: Meshell herself plays the bass in every song in the album, along with an array of other instruments across each track (but each still also has a number of fantastic session musicians). She's an incredibly talented inspanidual that I wish had more recognition and is still putting out great music to this day. If you feel like checking out more of her I suggest her debut, Plantation Lullabies, which to me feels like a... prototype? of Peace Beyond Passion (in a good way), or even her most recent record, although that one leans far more into the jazz fusion field and might not be as much of your thing.

Either way, thank you for taking the time to listen to all of these, following the thread and reading the writeups has been really enjoyable even if I'm not particularly familiar with many albums across the entire nominated set.
